KS Grumpy 85 GSL

Well, got her driving a few weeks ago as noted in a previous thread, but some new issues have cropped up. Decided to get into my cups a bit tonight and didn't feel like bothering inspecting her tonight.

1) Today she started wobbling a little on the rear end at low speed and has developed a rumble at speed. I'm supposing it is probably a wheel bearing. It seems to be coming from the left rear. I know the sway bar bushings are crap but I was going to remove the damned thing anyways, but I wouldn't think that would cause this issue. Any other things I should check before ripping the hub apart?

2) When revving her up, she misfires or stumbles at about 4k rpm as if she isn't getting enough fuel, although the fuel filter is fresh and the bowls are half-full. If I let off the throttle and then get back on it it will run to redline (usually). It sputters like mad (kind of like an exhaust leak sound; I'd take video but I don't have a camera) and then the exhaust gets ridiculously hot (hot enough to smoke like a bastard from the passenger side beneath the door). Also, she deposits some "healthy" stains from the tail pipe on the parking lot at work when mashed on really hard. Almost looks like oil stains, but can't really tell. Exhaust smells oily anyways due to premix. I know I'm not mixing in too much. I know on the 83 GS I had similar things happened after the cat element had collapsed, discovered when replacing the manifold with a header. This one kinda has me stumped thus far.

1) this could be a wheel bearing or it might just be a bent wheel or unbalanced wheel.

2) sounds like you could have a clogged cat. Is your car still completely stock? Is the OMP still hooked up? If the OMP is hooked up, why are you premixing?

No, rat's nest got removed shortly after I got her running. I premix because I'm not certain the OMP is functioning properly. Beyond that, she's stock.

1. This is pretty normal for our cars. The rear outer wheel bearings going bad is common. You
will have to remove each axle and have them removed and pressed on. You can easily remove
them yourself but they require a min of 5 tons to press the collar back on correcly.

2. Sounds like your leaning out at 4k and letting up and depressing the accelerator again is
pumping the AP to squirt a bit of juice back in there and then you off and running getting into
the secondaries. I would verify fuel pressure and volume at the carburetor. Your pump may be
getting weak or something else may be interferring with teh fuel flow.

1. Swap wheels front to back. Could be a flat spot from storage.

2. Check for spark on all plugs. Glowing exhaust manifold or header is an indication of defunct leading ignition. Usually a very simple fix. Definitely check this before you even TOUCH your carb (to prevent compounding issues).

I'd say there's about a 90% chance that those are your issues. Best of luck.

Definitely know she's getting enough fuel. Bowls are almost constantly half-full and drop very little below that. Stood beside her with a flashlight and inspection mirror to watch the bowls while I ran her up by manually operating the throttle.

Pulled the dizzy cap off and looked at the rotor and cap terminals and was surprised to find that apparently the rotor has been sawing the terminals (evidenced by deep grooves cut in the lower set and a fluttering of brass [at least thats what it looks like] particles when I took the cap off). What in the hell would cause that?

Also, there were some electrical deposits on both rotor and cap terminals from hot arcs. Doubt that in itself is causing any issues.

Gonna order both and replace those, then swap the plugs as well before I start testing coils and igniters. I sincerely hope it isn't a bad igniter.

Still haven't gotten to pulling the rear wheels yet. Far as I can tell the tires aren't flat-spotted. Tires are less than a thousand miles rolled and has spent her last year or so garaged and on jackstands with wheels/tires stacked in a corner. No dry rot and they hold air perfectly.

Haven't yet seen the glowing manifold (although I've seen it before on my 83 which was at high altitude), but the cat and downpipe were ridiculously hot today after doing some more troubleshooting. Enough radiant heat to not even want to touch either with welder's gloves on. Worse comes to worse I'll bust out the angle grinder and saw the bastard cat off.
