Grounding problem?
Hi guys,
I am having some problems with my gauges on the FB... I replaced the steering box, I realized that there's a little wire on the shaft of the old one but not the new one. I don't think there's a problem so I installed it anyway. Is it a ground wire?
In order to remove the steering box/shaft. I had to remove the headlight/signal assembly, I am not sure why but now when I turn on the headlights. It'd automatically go to high beam, and when I pull it (suppose to be high beam) then it'd turns to low beam. It's weird, water temp rises all the way to the top at night when the lights are on. Everything else is fine except that.
I also checked the water temp with a gauge, it shows fine, not overheating. I have autometer gauges, oil temp/psi only so far. Whenever I signal... they would tick with it...
What problem would that be?
My voltage also ticks when I signal... even when the electric fan kicks on... the temperature on the Autometer rises as well.
It also seems like whenever the car is in motion, the temperature goes up on the stock cluster.
I am an electrical dummie... it's hard to figure out on my own.

i had the exact same problem with my old 81 GSL never figured it out....
as far as i know there is no ground wire for the steering box. when the lights are on, it seems as though its causing the wiring to the coolant temp gauge on the cluster to become grounded, causing the temp gauge to peak and taking away a ground to stabilize the voltage when another source (turn signals) is drawing power. there is an old thread regarding this same topic..i just dont remember what it is titled.

That's a ground issue but I don't know why there would be a ground on the steering box/shaft. When I replaced my battery cables on the FB I only grounded it to the block not thinking it was also grounded to the fender. Temp would go hot, lights were dim, volt meter was low and did the same tick as your's does with the turn signals, my radio would flicker on and off with the brakes, etc.

Yeah, I forgot to mention that every time I hit the brakes... my autometer gauges would flicker as well.
It's really weird, I don't think that'd be the problem with the steering box since it's attached to the frame/body.
Hmm... what should I do? Should I ground something?
