Lightbulb Ground up resto

Have an 85 GS. Bought it w/ "fuel Delivery Problems". Rebuilt the carb, having NO experience. Got the car running enough to scoot two blocks down to the gas station, fill a gas can (car still running) and back home. came out next week...car would not fire. Turns, but will not fire. Started w/ basics (spark/ fuel). Went home to think about it. Came out next week...Car would not turn. Popped hood, clutch master is porous and leaking. this was 18 mos ago.

So... I now have a ton of parts on the shelf for this thing, and a running FC to compare to... I want a full ground up resto... it should be the same as a piston job... but I want to be sure I'm not missing anything... Is there anything I should be aware of, guys? Any suggestions?

Welcome to information heaven my friend...

First of all, if you have not already done so then take a good look at the FAQ section. 90% of the information that you will ever need can be found there.

I also have an '85 GS and love it. This forum has been a life saver, and I cannot tell you how much I have learned just by reading and participating in problem solving with these guys.

One thing you could do to greatly simplify things would be to consider the rat's nest removal (info found in FAQ section). This involves the removal of all of the emissions components except for the cats. There are also a number of items that you can simply remove from the carb... There have been some great threads on this, but you will need to search for them (try the term "naked nikki")..

My philosophy is, "if it ain't there, then it can't be broken"... so I try to remove anything that does not really have to be there....

Good luck with your project!

thanks guys.

I knew about the rats nest removal, but hadn't previously considered it because I needed to pass emmisions. now I've tipped 20 yrs and that no longer matters. Over the shoulder it goes!
