Have someone stand near the engine bay with a piece of hose in their ear and see if they can find the noise while you turn it over. The starter meshes with the ring gear. Had the clutch out recently?

I've got the same problem - turn the key and it grinds. Why couldn't Mazda use a Bendix type starter instead of this old GM-like relic!
