Mazda has a transmission plant, so its pretty rare that they buy a transmission from outside.

It was in an rx model but not a rx7. Is there any way to tell what it is from the outside? I am trying to get some pics.
It is ribbed on the outside and not smooth like a normal rx7 trans.

I was not aware of that
The pre-RX-7 transmissions were the ribcase design. The Turbo II trans is a development of it. It's still a Mazda transmission.
Heh. The version of this trans (very loosely based) used in Fords is referred to as the "Kogyo". Kogyo as in Toyo Kogyo as in Mazda.

in the late 80's the fords literally have the R box/T2 trans, and then sometime in the early 90's they get a P type, trans that is in the ranger/B truck from 93 to whenever they stopped making them (too boring to care).
the P type trans gets a 6th gear and lands in the 2006 miata, and then the 2009 Rx8

I thought Toyota used Aisin for transmissions.
A while back, I discovered that the "Toyota" bellhousing pattern was almost generic. You could find it on just about anything that ever used an Aisin transmission. Thanks to Jeep and the "AW15" transmission alone, bellhousings exist for AMC, Chevy 60-degree, Chrysler small-block, and Chrysler 4-cylinder. Thanks to GM, bellhousings exist for the Atlas engine (4/5/6cyl DOHC trucks) as well as the Ecotec (Solstice/Sky). And so forth.
Unless you mean the Supra 6-speed transmission. I think that was the odd one out.
