Grey Smoke and can not get to redline

I tried doing a search but nothing stood out so I will ask anyhow. ! have a 85 GS, and it smokes. A grey smoke but it only does it sometimes, I first noticed it when I got off the highway on day. Like I said it does not happen all the time, sometimes driving, but not at idle. Also I can not get to redline. At about 6000 it will bounce back. I changed the fuel filter but nothing changed. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Change your fuel filter, it is probably clogged causing you to run lean (grey smoke). If that doesn't help then check the output of your fuel pump.

I changed the filter but that did nothing. it does not have an after market ignition, but it seems it used to. It had a msd sticker still on the inside of the hood.

You sure the msd still isn't on it? The only thing that I can see making it bounce back like that is a rev limiter.

no box, stock coils and wiring. Should I try tapping into the tach wire and try a different tach?

Acutally, Denso's are BETTER than NGK's. Denso is what Mazda uses when they roll off the floor.

Do not run DENSO'S by far that is the worst plug ever to be put on the market. Just a few years ago I had a detonation problem on a nissan z74 engine. I worked on it for two weeks trying to figure out what the problem was.... Just for fun I tried a plug out of my 280z which was in fact NGK, and the problem quit.

NGK ALL THE WAY!!!!!!!!!
