Got my hands on a GSL. What year is it?

I looked at a RX-7 today that I can pick up for $250-300 CDN today. The body had very little rust with a solid floor, 4 wheel disc, AC, sunroof, headlight washers, 12A motor that runs good. Would this be an 84 or 85. I had a 84 GSL-SE in the past and a 79. But I dont know what year this is.

Well, your gonna have to give us some more info thatn that. Where are the badges? If they say GSL on the back, its an 84/85. If they are on the side, its an 81-83, or at least an 83, I know that much . Also, if you want to post your VIN, I can run it through carfax for you (if my account is still active). Then it will tell you. Also, you can look on the sticker on the drivers door frame thing...Where the door latches to the car.

EDIT: Oh and the biggie, look at the interior. If it has round vents and what not, then its and 81-83, but if it has the rectangle vents, its an 84/85.

It has the GSL on the back and rectangle vents on the interior. The door sticker was not there. I don't have the VIN yet. What are the differences between the 84 and 85?

Yea get it! AFAIK the 84's had slider vent controls, and the 85's had push buttons.

It has the push button vent controls. So it must be an 85. Thanks for the advice. Also, the exhaust is shot. Can I pass emissions with an aftermarket exhaust with a high flow single cat? I want to do it as cheap as possible and I know that the factory replacement exhaust is expensive.

My 85 has slider controls. The pushbuttons came on the 84/85 GSL and SE models.

VIN is in three places on the car. Door jamb, On the fire wall, and on the dash.

Starting 1981, VIN's were all 17 digit. All 10th digits were the year... starting with A in 1981. Skip I and O... Too confusing iwth 1 and 0...

Yes, but make sure it's a three way cat and you have the air pump still injecting air into it to guarantee passing emissions...unfortunately, you'll either need to keep the ACV unit or use a turbo surge valve with an out board relay to keep said air from being injected at higher RPM's or you'll bake the cat wihtin a year...
