Got my 4th Rx7 - GSL-SE for $50!

Hey peoples,

I picked up my 4th Rx7 today. This makes the 3rd one I have scored after giving out my business cards at work.

My sig GSL is my daily driver, and attracts alot of attention from other rotary people since my work parking lot is right off a major highway in town.

Anyhow, I met this kid a few months back, when him and some of his friends were gawking at my car while I was working. They came in and asked for the owner, and wanted to talk forever with their rotary questions. Turns out this kid had a white 85 GSL-SE that he "had big plans for". That got my attention, until I heard the Fast and the Furious crap he was talking about........neons under the car, an Rx7 indiglo decal on the doors saying RX-7.......some horrible crap plans, but anyhow - I gave him a business card, and told him, if he wanted me to check the car out, or do any work for him, he should look me up.

He came into work a week ago saying his SE was stalling and he was baffled, and asked if I was interested in buying it.

I went to check it out......passenger side fender a little banged up from a parking lot escapade, some bondo, which appears to be a weak *** attempt to hide a dent on the passenger side, but overall, not bad.

I checked it out, the car is just flooding itself out - I tell him its in pretty bad shape, and ask what he wants for it. I'm ready to fork over a few hundred, and the kid says $50.......if I think thats fair.

Hell yeah it was.....and I was able to get a tow dolly for only $24 in town.

Now I have my full GSL-SE suspension swap available for my Motegi wheels (sig), another glass sunroof, a FI 13b, and some more louvers.

One question though.......did the SE ever come with color matched wheels? This one is white, not cream but white......with matching white SE wheels. Was this factory, or not?

I do not know you but after reading what you posted on this board I wonder if you have any morals at all. You are actually proud of cheating a kid out of his car? How would you feel if you are at the receiving end? I can not believe you would do something like that and feel good about it.....Getting a good deal through honest means is one thing, deceiving others for personal gains puts you in the same league as other low life con-men.

Nice find! $50 is like the cost of half a college textbook, or a couple DVDs, or maybe even a whole movie ticket!

As for the wheels, I've never heard or seen factory white wheels. IIRC they were all plain aluminum (shiny).

Post a pic, I'm interested in seeing it!

As for the kid, he GAVE the car away practically. I wouldn't feel sorry for him. I do hope he learns the value of money though...

I got mine for $100 with a blown rear rotor but mint interior and a few dints.

By the way, JLIU, I dont know if youre kidding or not, but if the kid has no idea what he has and ASKS for $50 for it, he doesnt desrve it anyway.

I agree... but also disagree.... he should ask what he wants for it..... not some random number.... But you still should have helped him out a bit.... but its all good now I guess... you got anothercar that your gonna strip... I would fix it up decent and make some money off it....

, I will give you $250 and ill pay to have it shipped, thats 4 times what you gave for it

ehh, i just wouldnt be doin that to people, cause i know how much i love my car

Lieing to buy the car cheap is a lot better than lieing to sell a car expensive. I think it's OK. You saved it from a worse fate.

Heck, one of the guys on this BBS gave me an 83 free to save it from the crusher. It was running good (but still needs smog) but exterior and interior were trashed. All that's fixed, and now I just need the smog and rubout the paint. Good car.

I'm kind of neutral on this one. It was probably given to the kid so any profit he makes should make him happy. If he did buy it himself then he would have had a better idea of what to ask for it. There may have been a bit of manipulation but it's not much different then what stealerships do to customers daily.

Whoa......lol......calm down people.

The kid just wanted the car gone. Maybe I should have included in my story, that when he stopped in at work, he asked if I wanted to buy it, and said "If you dont want it, I'm just going to get rid of it."

It was in his mom's name, and she was glad to see it go. I didn't LIE to the kid, I told him its in pretty bad shape and asked what HE wanted for it. He said $50, I said deal. Hell, technically, he said $20, $50, whatever you think is fair. I gave him the higher of the 2!

Now, for some other random laughter.

The kid is 17, and totally ghetto. The kind of white kid, that says "Holla".

He tells me when I'm there checking the car out the first time, that he wants to get rid of the SE, since he's getting a Skyline.

Me: "Oh yeah? Where from?"
Him: "Brand new, off the dealership lot. 0 miles."
"Oh?"
"Yeah, I'm starting a car club. Gonna have some tight rides, man. I'm getting the Skyline, and a Caddy."

"Hm....Thats cool."

Lol. Anyhow, I'll post some pics tomorrow. Remember, crazies........the kid said he was gonna get rid of it, if I didn't buy it. I didn't scam some kid out of a car......I just got a lucky deal.

I've been finding some good deals since I moved to Northern AZ back in July.

First extra 7, was an 86 FC. There were some mexicans who could barely understand me and vice versa. They eventually brought some young kid in as a translator, and after they realized I was interested in the car, they said $1000. I passed on the deal, and a month later, I found the car just dropped off minutes ago at a local salvage yard. I went in, and bought the car from them for $375 towed to my door. It ran fine, was a little ratty inside, but my curiousity got the better of me, so I completely stripped it bolt by bolt, learned the rotary, and parted out the rest.

The next one, was a 79 SA - red, glass sunroof. Another customer I met at work. He liked the rotary as well, and was fascinated by the condition of my GSL, so we exchanged numbers. I helped him get it running once, and then about 2 months later, it was giving him more trouble, so he wanted out of it. I offered him $400, and he took $340 I had on me at the time.

So the cars are getting cheaper and cheaper...

$3200.......$375......$340........and now $50.

I think I'll lose conciousness if I can find a deal that beats $50.....

There's 2 more FBs I know of nearby. 1 is a Iotus blue 85 GS.....runs good, the lady wants $2000 though.

The next is a worn out cream 85 GS. Obvious water leaks, as the engine itself steams when hot, and pretty low power. This guy is a dentist across the street, and even with the dry rotted interior and worn out engine.......he still wants $1100.

I guess it's good they are higher priced. I'm running out of parking spots!

Great find.

As far as cheating the boy. He asked if you wanted it and then named the price. No cheat involved. Most likely he would have payed a crusher to take the car in another week or two. I have seen it many times. I offered a guy $100 for a dart he had, he wanted $300. Month later I talked to him and he had given it to the crusher.

That sads to hear one go to the crusher... I have an old Valiant and love it.

Sounds like you did the kid a favor, and kept one ricer off the road. Sad fact is that nowadays, $50 won't buy but a few tanks of gas.

Trust me.. I was with Cody when he checked out the car. I had to turn around and laugh my *** off silently as these guys were talking about Neon lights, huge decals on the side, and his brand new Skyline... 0 MILES FRESH OFF THE LOT. This car had a worse fate coming to it if Cody hadn't bought it, and those kids REALLY wanted to get rid of it. They were practically kicking the car they hated it so much.

Well I wasnt there so I will defer any judgement on you Cody. It came across in your post as if you swindled the kid. Whether you duped some kid instead of possibly helping a budding/noob future rotorhead only your heart/consience knows. We were all young and stupid once ya know. I hope you did the right thing.

Here we go back to the everyone hates ricers thing. I really don't care what someone does to a car. It just burns my *** when people laugh at things that may not look the best. Sure, I have done it a few times, but if the kid wanted neons, let him have them in peace.

Anyway, great find. I just hope you really didn't swindle the kid any.

Hey now, i've got street glow on my car... It looks nice, and it cost $100 so it was an extremly cheap kit. It adds to the car when it's just sitting in a parking lot. I know it's not going to make the car faster but i'll be damned if it isn't fun to play with. I am no ricer, but some things that ricers do, IMHO i think most of us like it but since they do it first, it's labled as "ricey". As for the $50 the kid offered the car to him for 50 he didn't offer him that, it was given to him pretty much. Anywho, I just wanted to stand up for my underglow.
