Got an ignition question for you intelligent ignition dudes.

Today I got all my jets for my Weber, played around with what was recommended and set it from there. I have the carb very nicely tuned. I love that Weber, it's so easy to work on. Anyway, I came to the conclusion that it's not my Weber that's making my car bog at wot. I think it's my ignition. I have an MSD 6AL with a 6k pill, 2nd gen coil, and a blaster coil for trailing. I want to dump this set up since it's not the best now since I got the s/c.

Can you fine gentlemen give me some recommendations on what would work well with my set up. Thanks!

Oh btw, I know some of you guys have given me options before, but that was a while back, and I don't remember. Since everything else is done, I can now concentrate on ignition.

I can tell you DLIDFIS is awesome in everything I've installed it in so far, including a Camden 7" in an REPU with a T2 engine and a Holley carb.

Each leading coil has its own ignitor and coil, and whatever it doesn't use to initiate the spark goes into the duration of the spark. In other words, it ignites more AF mixture thanks to having a long duration spark.

The MSD has a very short duration spark and only has mutiple sparks at low RPM. At high RPM, where more spark is needed, the MSD falls short.

I didn't like the MSD in my REPU so I replaced it with DLIDFIS and it works very well now. Read about my latest exploits here. https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showpo...31&postcount=7

Even a single-strike CDI will kick *** over a standard Kettering ignition.

The dual ended coils... in short, they suck, and it might be overheating. Get a pair of nice big coils instead.

What timing are you running? Faulty ignition results in breaking up, not a bog.

Sorry not a bog. I meant more like when you hit a rev limit. I will look into that also.
Thanks

What makes you so sure it's tuned correctly?

I'm not, but it starts right up, idles perfect, and the power is awsome when I stomp on it. I'm talking pull you to the seat awsome! Why? are you doubting me? Alot of great people helped me get it right. I think i'm going to go with jeff's DLIDFIS set up. I have everything else, just need another coil.

6K pill? Try running it wihtout it (mine is 9600 pill since I switched to a 4.44 but prior to that, none.

What spark plug wires are you running? I've encountered several problems with 10mm magnercor. Bad batch maybe?

Wacky has a good point, the 6al has a soft rev limiter, ie, it kicks in like 4-500 rpm before where your pill is set, so it might feel like a rev limiter because IT IS the rev limiter... why are you using the 6k pill anyway, you are driving a wankel!

Hmm? I didn't know you could run it without a pill. It came with the 6k pill. I'm running accel wires. I was told my ignition set up is not the best for my set up so i'm going to try jeff's and find a locked distributor and see how I like that. I don't have a welder and want to keep my orig dizzy stock.

I'm going to need those little plugs that go behind the igniter, anyone got any or have a good idea on what to use? I think someone mentioned tweeter connectors, but there has to be a better way.

Kim, you could use GM HEI ignition modules. They're cheap and the one pin that's a little smaller than the other three is easy to find a connector. The smaller connectors for the backs of the J-109s can be found at a car stereo shop because some midrange and tweeters have the same size pins (quick disconnects).

Kim, I would just go get a higher pill first(for ref, RX7's stock redline is 7K), so go get a 7K pill, and then give that a shot ... because if you reved to 6k, it's suppose to turn off (point of a rev limiter), i'm not sure if you can run it without a pill, but at least get a higher rpm pill and try that out first... If that still doesn't work, then go try Jeff's way...

There is a list somewhere showing the resistors used in each 'pill'. If you can't find any pills locally but have an assortment of resistors and some wire in the correct guage to fit snuggly in the holes, you could choose one or more which would give you the same resistance as the 7k RPM pill and build you own. Being handy with a soldering iron is helpful too, but it's not really an involved project like a MegaSquirt or whatever.
