Good wheels for SA?

I have a 1980 GS and I hate the way the wheels hide inside the fenders, giving the car a less than aggressive look.

1) What are a few 15" wheels that will look good on a black car?

2) How can I make it so that they don't hide inside the fenders so much?

3) Will it be expensive?

Well, beeing a 80 owner i can tell you this much:

1. Wheels are limited if you just look for 4*110 patterns. I can only think of a few that will fit, mostly 13, 14, and 15`s. For a comfortable ride, 15 is the way to go.

2. There are several ways to obtain other bolt patterns, the ones i remember right now are:

- Redrilling the rim itself, thus obtaining the desired bolt pattern

- Changing the spindles from a different car

- GLS-SE suspension swap. This mod also have other positive benefits, like LSD and better struts, coils and not at least brakes!

- rims with 4*108 pattern will fit. You will need another center ring to properly center the rim to the hub and "loose" head bolts. This is the cheap way, and despite what people say about the bolts beeing "dangerous" and such it works really great. I have been running 16`s for 3 years with this method and never had a problem. The only precaution you must take is to make sure that the bolts have steel heads, not copper! The center ring is also very important, remember, this is the part that actually centers the rim. The bolts only holds it in place!

3. Order from Japan! Expencive, but damn, Watanabe RS8`s looks goooood! You can sometimes find them on Yahoo auctions.

4. Order from Australia. See above, expencive!

mortenf, where do you get this new center ring from? I checked tire.com and found quite a few more wheel options w/ this method, and it would be a much more inexpensive alternative until I am ready to do a full job on the '7.

Your picture is glorious! Makes me miss my 80LS, but then I only have to go out in the garage and glance at it's current state of disrepair...

The SA's still hold a special place in my heart for some reason. Maybe it was that I had that car in Highschool and drove it pretty much everywhere, but the car in my signature is my daily driver. One of these days, I keep telling myself that I'll rebuild my 80LS (black like yours in the picture), but I can't seem to get around to it.

Thanks for posting that picture.

I was able to have American Racing 6-spokes custom drilled for my 80LS a great while ago. These wheels look very similar to the vintage racing wheels on the 79/80 IMSA cars. Good luck in your search,

Bear in mind that I don't think most modern import-style rims look good on first gens (ROH Snypers and the like). I like the weds wheels and panasports. I love black rims with chrome lips but that wouldn't look good on a black car.

Watanabe RS8... Uhhhhh! Sexy!

Over here in Europe, center rings are commonly available trough wheelshops. You can also have them machined, does not cost that much!

Ok, picture this. Every rim has a center hole that basically centers the rim over the spindle on the car. Inside this hole, center rings are used to get a tight fit, and the rim is centered.. Different cars have different size spindles, and thus there are different size center rings that allows you to fit one rim type onto various cars!

The RX has a little different ring than most other cars (go figure) but they can easily be machined to fit!

I`ll see if i can dig up a pic!

There. this is the ring that goes inside the center hole of the rim!

Yes but what about the 4x110 bolt pattern? It's so hard to find aftermarkets for it.

Like i said, you cant either redrill the rims, the hub or use 4*108 with loose head bolts if you dont want do do a suspension swap!

Finding 4*110 is hard, but sometimes you can see them on Ebay. I have one of the rarest set ever made at home, they are 13`s and made by ATS. Rim is called "classic". I have never ever seen a set like this, and therefore i will never sell them!
