A good TII Question!

I recently ran across something in the 'yard and want to know at what point do yall think a motor isn't salvagable? I believe the car is an '88 aniversery edition w/ the white wheels and has had itself a pretty good electrical fire. Of course all the wires and connectors are melted, but the only thing missing is the turbo and intercooler. Aside from the obvious fire, the car looks to be in good shape and didn't seemed ragged out. Another quick question, are brakes on TII the same as the base RX-7's in the second gens?. Thanks

No, the brakes are better if I recall correctly.

Also, I would snag the engine out of it. Who cares if it is in bad shape or not? If you can take it apart, you can replace the bad parts of it and what have you. Plus it will be a four port. Carb it and stick it in an FB after porting the hell out of it.

That's where my vote goes.

I wonder what crawled up into the exhaust port, with the turbo missing now. Check and see if you can turn the engine by hand. If so, grab it.

How much do they want for it? You can always part it out and make some easy cash.

Turbo II brakes are better. If you're willing to rebuild, I'd snag it. And only 74-78 13B's were 4 Port if I remember correctly.

T2 engines are 4 port as well. And I would see if it turns over by hand before bothering with it.

Turning over by hand will only do you so much good. Bring in an engine lift, pull the engine out, and get a flash light. Look into the exhaust port, and spin the engine around, examining each apex seal. If they are all intact, and will move freely, chances are, the motor is incredibly salvageable.

If any of the apex seals have chunks missing, or if one is missing altogether, consider atleast one rotor/housing dead.

Yea turning it by hand only tells you if its siezed or not, but I was just saying I'd start there, if you can't even turn it then why bother going further?

All turbo engines are 4 port.
The AE 2nd gen is just a standard S4 TII with a special paint job, wheels and few do-dads.As the fire proved, they suffer from the same problems that all S4's had(like leaky fuel pusation dampers!!)

It'd be a job to get it all back together and running on the stock ECU,since all the plastic and rubber stuff on the sensors and control gear,is likely to be melted. But still,at the very least youll have a good TII engine core and tranny, not to mention the TII rearend and 5 lug "big brakes" you could sell off.....whoever took the turbo and manifold probably did you a favor. The S4 units suck, and the improved S5 turbo/manifold is a direct swap.

Thanks guys, will try to make it over there this week to check the above and get some parts hopefully. Your absolutely correct about all the stuff being melted to the point of no use though.
