Question Good idea to use fuel additives?

Two questions:

1)My car needs to pass emissions this month, what should I do to get it ready? Also, is it a good idea to put that "pass emissions" fuel additive in it?

2)When I finally get this thing on the drag strip, would it be ok to use an octain boost additive and 92 octain gas?

Thanks!

*thanks god he lives in alberta canada*
emissons control board - "hey earl, you ever seen one o' dem wankel engines!?! i hate comunism, and i hate dems engines too a'huk!"

Ask the guys at the track what they use, I am sure you'd get some helpful advice from them. I'd asume that adding an octane booster to 92 octane gas would yeild some marginal results maybe getting you to 95 - 97 but nothing any higher (i could be wrong here though). Best bet would be to ask around and see what others use.

There is stuff out there that guarantees you pass an emissions test.... they sell it in AutoZone. I've never used it, though. Search on the forum, there have been other threads about this.

Rotaries run better on lower octane.

jimmyv13 is right. 87 octane or even a bit lower is ideal for rotaries, unless they are turbo'd or supercharged, of course.

octane is in the fuel to prevent it from igniting before the spark plugs fire (detonation)

Racers use high octane fuel to prevent this from happening because they ether run high boost or have a high engine compression ratio. In your case, unless the above aplies to you, its gonna give you nuthing at all and theoreticaly makes your fuel harder to burn.

85 will do just fine for a NA engine.

Unfortunately this happens to be a very common misconception

They sell 85octane at upper alitudes due to the lower air density up there, kinda like natural octane boost because thiner air makes the combustion slower. Cars that normally run 89 can go to 87 and cars runnin 93 can go to 89 safely up above 4000ft. With the thinner air at high alitude the the amount of air is ofcourse less and less fuel is used. Thats why engines that make about 100hp near sea-level will make 75hp at 11,000ft because less air is fed in. If your running boost, this doesn't work out the same way ofcourse. ..you just run your normal octane.

I agree with everyone, go with the el-cheapo gas...save your money ...no additives except for: MMO in the oil and gas...great for rotaries.....cjf..................

I forgot to mention earlier, I passed my emissions, and I used a bottle of the guaranteed emission stuff. Dunno if it helped, but it didn't hurt...
