Glowing read header after a weekn in storage?

Hi everyone, sorry i know i havennt been on here in a while but ive been very busy workin and goin to school. anyways my problem is as it sounds, after a week in storage i though id put 5 gallons in the gas tank, and a can of seafoam in the tank, my storage is in a 10 bye 20 room and i connected my negative battery cable, removed my rags form the exhaust adn intake, pulled the choked and started the engine, then i saw my header was cherry red, so i turned my E- fan on, then it went back to normal. Did this happen to anybody before?? the weird thing is that my temp gauge was cool but the header was beat red. well i just wanna know if this is ok but i doubt it. thanks for the help everyone.

Since it's doubtful you timing jumped while being parked, you may have lost your leading ignition or there may be something plugging the exhaust.

left a rag in the exhaust?

Otherwise, I'm with Trocho on this one. And with no leading ignition the car would run, but crappy and lacking power.

ok guys, i checked me leading ignition and my traling ignition and i have spark on both.or should i say on all 4 spark plugs, but if it has to do with leading could it be that my vaccum advances are hooked up to the carb wrong. well i also checked my exhaust and it seems to be flowing very freely out the pipe and i got spark so anything else??thanks.

You're looking for a mark in the pulley. Do a search for timing and you'll see lots of data on how to do it, or check your Haynes manual or FSM, the latter been available online in the FAQ sticky.

While in storage is it possible a small animal could've crawled in there and made a nest of some sort?

You could just be burning up a critter's family.

It's the carb. Take off the air cleaner cover and look into the carb when it's idling. You should not see spurts of gas exiting the primary venturis. Only the idle circuit should be flowing, which has tiny slits down at the butterfly valves and is difficult to see. If the venturis are flowing, tons of gas is dumping into the engine and burning inside the exhaust. Your carb may need a rebuild.

Or maybe your leading timing went out, or just one of th eleading plugs is not firing very well. This is the other common cause of glowing exhaust components.

Whatever it turns out to be, it is not because it spent a week in storage. Mine has 4000 miles in the last ten years, so it does lots of weeks of storage with no ill affects.

when i was in the service the exhust maniflod on a jeep almost instantly started glowing .it took awhile to figure out .ended up being vibration. a bracket from the block to the exhust manifold was missing .bolted it on and pressto no mo glow.

Interpretation is an exhaust leak at the gasket between the block and exhaust manifold. yo.

had the exact same problem, but it was my cats glowing, I sprayed a whole lot of carb/throttle body cleaner down the carb and let it sit a bit, then started her up and sprayed in more while running, seemed to fix it magically. I later talked to an old school rotary mechanic (30 yrs rotary exp) at my local mazda dealership and he said it was very likely that the carb was sticking and dumping too much gas, seems to happen when rotarys run very rich.
