Does anyone know if the glass moonroof is swappable into a regualr sunroof car? Are they the same size? What are they worth? the parts car that I'm getting has one, and if it won't swap I guess I'll sell it

glass sunroofs go anywhere from $100-$200 depending on condition and if they have the leather pouch..

I'd bet the 80-85 sunroofs are pretty much the same. Maybe some changes in **** colors. The VB catalog shows most of the parts applicable to 80-85. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

The glass "moonroofs" are interchangable with the metal "sunroofs".

My SE didn't come with a moonroof so I bought one off ebay for $150 + shipping that turned out to about $200. It fits perfect and have had no problems at all with it. Have no idea what year it is from.

Some guy on the forum was selling one for $100 but wanted me to send him money first and wouldn't take COD--so I passed on that.

Good Luck, Scott

Mine was free with the car for my 83 GSL, the other one was $20 from a guy that left a note under my windshield wiper for the 85 GSL, and my other one was $11.50 from the junk yard for my 85 GSL-SE. Now, if only I could find a 4th one, the GS needs one too .

Whaaa? $200 or $20. Why is there such a price difference? What should I look for in a sunroof? I'm looking to get one because my car didn't come with one. (It's a GSL-SE and it should have one but the previous owner didn't have it blah blah blah). Are there smoked ones AND clear ones?

Thanks for reading and replying!

The difference comes from people knowing what they have . The guy I bought mine from didnt know the current value of them, and no longer had an RX-7 anyway. The other one came from a junk yard, and they dont know the value either.

they are definately interchangeable. Pamela came with both, and a mint condition valise to store the unused one in.

My falling apart SE has both as well....amazingly. Only wish it was in as "mint" condition as your's probably are, Mannits. My GS has neither, I like it better without (weight savings, no 'hole' in the uni-body requring added structure, less sun to expose/rot the interior, etc.), but I guess I'm the type thats takes function before form.

i personally don't like them anymore. i had a moonroof in my other car and the only thing liked was freaking people out driving with my head sticking out of it.

I'm wondering if I could just get some Plexiglass, cut it to the right size, take the brackets off my metal sunroof and bolt them to the plexiglass...

Probably not...

What's the difference between Moon roof and Sun roof? Seems synonymous.

You guys are lucky with the junkyards, I've looked over Houston and San Antonio with no luck. Most of the yards are crushing cars that old to make way for newer ones.

One item of caution re the glass moonroofs for the SEs as they are almost 20 yrs. old (that I found on one I bought on the internet for $200) that a year after purchase the bolts, screws, and washers will rust or rot and become frozen to the hardware. Sun Auto is no longer in business. I drilled the bolts and screws that were frozen out since the metal and glass of the sunroof were about to meet tragically leading to potential glass breakage. The dealer discontinued the moonroof parts (they were not aftermarket) around 1991 so it was off the the local hardware store to try to get creative with wellnuts (an odd shaped rubber washer with brass threads inside),plastic spacers, rubber washers, rubber tubing, stainless steel button topped bolts, etc. It worked after 2 hours of experimentation and was time consuming but not a difficult project. Check the hardware to see if it is frozen before buying.

I did have one made out of tinted plexiglass. It is possible but they scratch very easily.

Plexiglass sounds like an interesting idea, for lighhtness and easy replacement. Maybe I'll give it a try with a piece of interestingly colored plastic from TAP. I've got OEM moonroofs on both cars, but a lighter unit would be interesting
