Getting off tranny fill plug
Getting off tranny fill plug
I cant get off that square plug to fill my tranny, I tried to use a 15mm open wrench and started to strip the bolt a little and now i dont know what to do to get it off
what did you guys use?
PS. I also used liquid wrench and let it sit first

First time I tried to get that off my SA tranny I had to pull the starter to get at the plug and get enough leverage on it! Why? because the Lug Nut who reefed it in there obviously did NOt know its a TAPERED THREAD! This plug does NOT have to be torqued on super tight! All you end up doing is spreading the hole wider as you drive the plug in
Once out I wrapped a bit of plumbers white tape around it, finger tightened it in then 1/2 a turn with the wrench-

I just did mine last weekend. I started with a wrench, and when I saw that wouldn't work I went straight to the vicegrips before I rounded the thing off. It was tight as heck for at least 2 full turns then got loose enough to turn by hand. Needless to say, I didn't put it back as tight....
I just did mine 2 weeks ago for the first time- almost busted a nut trying to loosen it with just a 14mm wrench- lucky me I had a 2 foot piece of 2" exhaust pipe lying around- sliped it on the wrench- gave it a tug & it broke loose- its always good to have a piece of pipe lying around!

For those that do manage to get thier filler plugs out, apply some anti-sieze before install. Another worthy note of advice, make sure you can get the plug out BEFORE you drain the tranny. The SA's can be filled from the shifter opening, all of the later trannys cannot.
You can also use the 12 point box end of a wrench or a 12 point socket on our fill plugs. You can use a 12 point tool here because the fill plug is 4-sided (just FYI for the noobs considering this).
I don't recall the exact size, but I think standard is what I used instead of metric because it fits a little better in '12 point mode'. Go through your wrenches or sockets, both metric and standard, and see which fits best.
Check to make sure some idiot mechanic hasn't rounded the plug too badly before you attempt this.
