Getting no gas from the tank!

Hi,

I have a 83 RX-7 that is having a problem getting gas. I replaced the fuel filter and still nothing. When I turn the key on I can hear the pump just fine. I put 6 or so liters of fuel in the tank. I took the lines off the pump and there is not gas in the lines at all!! Bone dry!! When I take the line off the carb I hear a sound like air is being pumped instead of fuel like there is not enough gas in the tank? Should I put more gas in the tank?????

Thanks,
Ron

The feed tube could be clogged. Did you take the filler cap off when checking feed line? Could also be the vent but if so you will hear sucktion when opening cap.

Might have to stick something in the feeder of the tank. Could be some rust or gum.

6 liters isn't much. Was the tank totally empty before? If so, put some more gas in it. I would add at least a few gallons (maybe another 10 liters) to be safe. It would suck to tear everything apart just to find out you were just low on gas.

mine does this when i leave the car for a week im going to pull the tank off as i think i have problem with one of the pipes letting air in and loosing pressure when the car is off thus letting the fuel drop back down

i put the pump on pull the feed off at the carb and suck the fuel through to start if off, its not nice so have some water near by, once you have given it a couple of sucks put the line down as low as possible it will come through eventually when it does switch or reconnect it quick it should be ok then

Does it help if you loosen/remove the gas cap?

No I tried that too same results, I am going to try and put some more fuel into it tonight and see what happens. I have a feeling the tank is going to have to come down but if my pump was worn out would that do it? Is is the pumps job to DRAW fuel out of the tank maybe my pump is worn out

If your on level ground that's enough gasoline. Try taking the gas cap off like I said and check flow again. If it's the pump then replace it. Check for posts on how test the pump (and have extinguisher handy).

I am going to take off the gas cap and check for fuel at the carb again with the pump running. I tried searching for how to test the pump but found nothing. Should I take the pump off and hook it to 12v and see if it will pump some fuel out of a jar?

Look at the service manuals in the FAQ for the procedure. But I imagine yea let someone turn the key to on while you have the line off and a gas can to catch the juice.

use some compressed air to blow into the fuel line where it comes into the pump. you should hear it bubble into the tank. if not the line is cloged.

Or you can put a longer fuel line to the back of the pump and try to suck gas out of a jar or small gas can. That's what I did and it told me my pump was fine. I tryed to blow air into the tank (using a hand balloon pump of all things) and did not get any air through. Told me the pick up tube was clogged. Used a bass guitar string attached to a drill and it unclogged it like a champ. I put a clear inline filter in the line to the carb in the engine bay. I was able to see the bits of rust coming through the back one. Finally had to get the tank sealed...problem solved...cheaper than a pump!
Good luck!

Thanks for all the info. Last night I put a little more fuel in the tank and unplugged the line that goes to the carb turned the key on and hear the pump clicking very good so my pump is good. There is no gas at all coming from the tank so I guess my pickup is plugged. I notice that before the pump there is the check valve or whatever do I start pushing wire right from the pump or after the white plastic valve????

I dropped the tank, pulled the hose off of the pickup tube on top of the tank. I got a bass guitar string for about 2.50 and put the end of it into my electric drill. I stuck the end of the string in the tube and turned on the drill. Slowly inserted it farther into the tube. It cleared it right up!
