At first when I bought the car I was intimidated, because I found lots of owners on the internet who abandoned the cars because of the rare parts and also because most mechanics don't know anything about them but this site has helped to eliminate all my fears.

My car is a 1985 RX-7 GS 5 speed. It's very fast and appears to have a custom exhaust, unfortunately it has one of those ugly wings on the back of it, the wing appears to be made from real carbon fiber but I hate it nevertheless and will be removing it. I'll probably try to sell it. Anyway from the research I've done it appears the engine in the 1985 mazdas were changed to the 13b engines but this one says 12a on the engine. Did I make a mistake or has the engine been replaced. The engine also feels too strong, like it's being modified, is there any way I can check this, I can spin the tires, taking off in first gear and the car can do 60 comfortably in 3rd gear.

Thanks for any answers you can give.

Not too strong. The 12a runs about 100-110 hp stock (depending on what you are reading). The gearing is designed to let the high revving motor get everything it can. Weighing in at only 2100 lbs, it will put down quite few competitors. Welcome to your new rotary rocket!

My name is Freddie, and I own a 83 Rx-7 not sure of any specifics because I just bought it for $75 and had the engine rebuilt so it would run. Body is in perfect condition and now it runs pretty good excepts for some minor things that just so happens when I drive.

Hope to get help from everyone, I sure could needs some. I would like to get the car in great running shape and with a little get up... Right now I will assume it is stock and can use some extra attention.

Hope to get some great advice soon

Freddie

I just joined the club. I have a 1980 RX7 Anniversary Edition. I bought it brand new so that means I've had it for 25 years. I've kept it stock and I don't like the idea of parting with it. Is there a place I can get parts for a decent price? Right now I'm looking for an "altitude compensater". Any help out there?

Hello all,
My name is Kevin Nichols i have a bad love love it is called RX-7s i have had atleast 5 or so most of were are for parts. It all started out with a buddy and his car, it was clean and simple. The GSL-SE just grabbed my attention on day when he got into it pretty good and the rear tires went up in smoke i was hooked! I now have a turbo fb that i have left nothing alone on the car i dont believe there is one stock part but the body (except the body kit) and small bits and pieces in the interior. Iam a 28 year old guy that has an automotive performance parts and installation shop in a small town few RX-7s. I have been involved with cars since about the age of 8 or so. I worked in a machine shop when i was 10 or so and had a really good summer that year it was awsome no rotary motors but 1500 horsepower V-8s. I was raised around the cubic inches. My first car was a toyota pickup then a small aray of cars since then. Aout 6 or 7 years ago i bought my first RX-7 and all i have done is build it race it and beat on it. well till we meet again or i think of something else tata for now.

Ahem....
Well, my name is Mario, I live in Napa,CA. and i have a deg in Architectural Engineering, which I gave up cause I can only stare at blueprints for so long. lol Being a Mechaninc is more rewarding/frustrating but te fruits of your labor are obvious. I am soon to be 28 yars old, I have an Aweome girlfriend who I adore (she loves me back by the way :P ) and 2 cats.

I first got into RX-7's when a friend of mine said his mom was selling her car. I was 18 and had no idea what i was in for! .....THERE SHE WAS... a turquoise blue 1984 GSL-SE with tan leather interior and ALL the bells and whistles. Not too shabby for my first actual car huh?
Sadly she was wrecked when i was 21 due to a shop mis-installing my new suspension ( Flat washers instead of LOCK washers to secure the rear shocks :() So after pissing blood for 2 weeks i decided that although my baby was no more, i would one day have another.
To date i have had 7 RX-7's the latest 2 being GSL-SE's. Here in town, I take a certain amount of pride in being the rotary go-to guy, as well as being able to school cars 20 years newer with my little 1.3 :)
It's been my pleasure to talk to some of you and all the support we give eachother on here is great. Just look at the sheer volume of knowledge we have accumulated on here! Great job fellas, glad to be a part of this family.

My turn-

My name is Brian Beachy. My very first car was a 1983 RX-7 that I bought wand brought back to life in 1993. Now I'm a couple of weeks shy of my 30th birthday, and my father gave me his SA a few weeks ago after purchasing a new Mazdaspeed Miata at my prompting. It is the SIXTH RX-7 I have owned. I got my AAS in automotive Technology some 9 tears ago, then spent 96-2000 in the Army, driving tanks. Glad to see there are some other GIs out there, too! I'm now in mechanical engineering school at Texas Tech, and want to get a career designing cars, and/or parts to make them faster. I started working on cars when I was 15, and my greatest achievement in turning wrenches so far was converting my '93 300zx to twin turbo (about $10,000 in labor, if that gives you an idea of how tough it was!!). Anyway, I have owned some 12 cars and done most of the repairs and maintenance on them, and have raced most of my sports cars. I also have a racing kart (my favorite toy), and a trophy collection to go along with the habit. Hopefully people on this site will understand that I know what I'm talking about...

Me Me ME!

Currently I own 2 RX-7s...my 84 GSL-SE I have owned for almost a year and my 87 TII that has sat for 2 years without a motor. (Hoping to be sold in a few days!) Ive owned 3 RX-7s in the past few years. The other being a 91 Vert..which was involved in a no-fault accident. Needless to say the car was totalled! I hope to be investing in a FD or a RX8 VERY soon!

I have been a LONG time lurker here and just decided to sign up a few days ago!
As you can guess by the SN I am a full time police officer in a Small central Alabama city. We have roughly 30 Officers, me being the youngest at 22. I am also a full time student about to have my AD in Criminal Justice / Criminology.

Im Dean and im a rxahoulic also. You,ve all made me feel old. I got my first rx in 85 it was a stock 79 model. I blew the motor a year later and bought a crashed 80 model for the motor. When It rusted out I bought a 81 gsl. It was an impound car and had sat for 5 years. I did a 13b conversion on it added 4.44 gears, lightweight flywheel, rb springs, rb swaybars, full rb exhaust, 48dcoe weber sidedrafts, and distibutor mods. This was in 89. Still have it today, just finished putting on quarter panels, new paint job, another rb full exhaust, new 13b streetport and some 3rd gen seats. In 2000 I bought a basket case 90 model, replaced the motor and exhaust and just sold it. Last year I bought a 94 touring. Im going to have to replace the motor in it, its burning coolant. Ive put a rb cat back on it and just bought a downpipe. It came with a funky veilside front end so I replaced it with a stock one.
Later, Dean.

Hi everyone.

My name is Max and I'm a new guy on the forum. I bought my '83 GSL about two years ago. I've been a car enthusiast since I was a kid, but I never really had a chance to get 'practical' experience on engines and car mechanics. That's why at the time I was looking for a nice project car to play with. I had a couple of models in mind, but I got more curious about the 7s because of their original engine design. A friend of mine found out there was one for sale nearby, so I went there to have a look. From the moment I saw one 'for real' and heard the engine running, that was it! I had to buy it! The car is really straight, besides the engines that shows some signs of age. The previous owner took good care of it and a lot of things have already been redone nicely. I plan making a swap in the near future, and I'm currently trying to get more and more infos on the different engines to make my decision. Right now the car is pretty much stock, but you bet it's not gonna be for long! ;) I look forward to get to know you and share the passion. Till then take care!

Hello there:
My name is Sam and I just got back from Iraq couple of month ago. So I 'm proud to be the owner of a 1985 GSL-SE. This is my 3rd mazda. First car to build was a 1973 RX3 station wagon with a 4 port 13B with overlap and bridgeport, racinbeat intake Holley 600, 57 primary jets and 60 secondary jets. The car used to make 10:89 in the quater mile in 1984. Well time moved up and here I'm with my 3rd mazda wich i'm restoring, but lately is giving me some trouble

PhucNguyen57 05-28-05 04:42 PM

Howdy,

My name is Randal. I picked up a friends 85 GSL for the cost of towing. It is completly stripped, but is all there mechanically. I'm still trying to decide what direction to go with it, and have no money right now, as I just took a pay cut that is larger than my current anual salary. I always wanted something with a rotary motor. I got into the whole thing because of my dads old stories. He worked for a mazda dealer in the 70's that sponsored his RX2 drag car. It was mostly stock (full interior, even stock wheels) with a street ported 12a, RB headder and a holley carb. He keeps a time slip from 1977 in his wallet to this day, 13.30et.

Hey,

My name is Adam. Just got my RX-7 last Saturday. It is my 2nd Mazda. My other car is a 1994 Mazda MX-6 LS. I love Mazdas. I work as a Software Developer. I go to school at ITT Technical Institute in Greenville, SC.

I have a 1983 1st gen and it is so sweet !!!! It only has 51 thousand miles . A Doctor owned it and it was hardly driven . I am new to this site so just saying Hello all !!!

DesertWRX 06-10-05 03:18 PM

1982 GSL 291,000 miles RX3 side housings, Racing Beat exhaust.
I've owned several RX3's beside the 7. Only the 7 is left. It's like an old friend. It would have a zillion miles on it if it hadn't sat in the garage for over 2 years. It still ran, but we just kinda lost interest in it. Now it is my main transportation to and from work, a 155 mile round trip. Every so often in the morning darkness I will meet one other RX7, who comes down from the Julian area. We usually give the curvy Hiway 78 a pretty good workout.
The old 7 is pretty fast and will get 23 mpg.

Bill, from the wayyy eastern part of San Diego County

Markusr2001 06-17-05 04:14 PM

1979 Mazda RX-7, Yellow, black interior, 66,000 original miles, 2nd owner.
Everything is stock, except I think the wheels are "dealer aftermarket".
They are aluminum ET rims (grayish color and spindly) still with the 4 x 110 bolt pattern.
I am thinking about replacing them with Panasports eventually. I live in southern California now, after relocating from Europe (Netherlands) and living there for 9 years. RX-7 was in Wisconsin in storage during that time. My car gets about 22 mpg highway and something a little worse than that in the city. She is so much fun to drive. I really get a lot enjoyment out of her. Great being part of this forum. I've learned a lot.

I plan on doing a restoration on the car to get it back into its original condition. Also want to get my ASE certfication from dunwoody so i can get into the auto biz and perhaps open my own shop someday. Peace and hope to meet most of you someday on the forum.

Newbie signing on

I recently bought a 1980 GS with a bad engine for $300 with a nice straight body. I am in the process of putting a 91 Ford 5.0 roller motor in it. I am a long time muscle car fan, but have recently dicovered drifting and autocrossing are fun too. I would like to hook up with some RX-7 fans in the Raleigh, NC area to swap parts and stories.

Intro

I am Joe, I live in Maine near the New Hampshire border, I'm 47 years old. I have an MBA, and work as a CFO of a large private school. Old cars are my therapy--they don't talk back, they are honest, and a _lot_ cheaper than a real therapist. ;) So I am really, really glad to be here on this forum. <Ahhh!>

I am a newbie to wankels, but not new to cars. I would rate myself just above a beginner level. This should tell you: I do timing belts, but don't do head gaskets (yet).

Why am I joining? I bought a 1982 RX-7 with only 60,000 miles on it in June that I am trying to get it back on the road. It needs a lot, especially anything that is rubber. It's been sitting for 10 years, most of it in storage, and had not been started in 2 years.

So far, I have been doing the obvious. I've changed the oil and filter, purged the old gas from the tank, rebuilt the carb, changed 1/2 of the vacuum hoses, changed the plugs, plug wires, cap, and rotor. She starts, but, as predictable, won't idle (yet). I have RTFM, and am working my way through the Haynes debug list. It starts and idles (with petal) as low as 1500 RPM. Make no mistake--I am still on the stupid list: e.g. I have yet to change the fuel filter, and I am wondering why it won't idle. <Ahem.>

RX7 Girl :)

Hey guys,

I've posted here occasionally and I'm always reading the board! I thought it was definitely time for an introduction. My name is Tammie and I have an 84' white GS. She's my baby! She's my second RX7 (my 82' is sitting in the back field and has been a convenient parts car!). I absolutely LOVE the RX7. The engine. I mean...that sound!!! It just does something to me. There's nothing else like the rotary! I will keep my 7 forever! I have big plans in the future for her. Right now, she's in pretty decent shape for her age. She has a new engine with 26,000 miles on her now. She just runs great. She purrs! I love driving her and get a lot of looks driving around town with RX7GIRL on my license plate! :) Someday I need to have the interior cleaned up a bit (the seats and the doors are a little messed up) and I want to repaint her too. I'm going to keep her as original as possible though. Anyhow...yea, I can talk about my car forever. LOL.

Besides my love of RX7's, I'm also a full time Criminal Justice undergrad and I'm currently an intern at the Coroner's office (talk about an interesting job!). I'm graduating in December and my goal is to become a Deputy Coroner. I also love traveling, music, web design, computers, and reading. Alright, I think that's a good enough intro! See you all on the boards!

Tammie

I tried this before but posted in a different place. Ok lets try again
Names Leonard. Ive been a big 70-8 zfan for years, owned 10 of them in various states of tune and have done both the v8 and straight six turbo conversion, as well as numerous NA buildups and carb combos. Recently sold my last z because after sitting under one once again, the fire was gone, there was no challenge and I already knew what the results of all the work would be having done it before.
I picked up my first rx7, a 83 gs with 116k on the clock and a great maintenance record. This was about two weeks ago. I just swapped in a gsl se rear end and brakes into it, and have replaced the belts and a squeaky water pump, changed the oil and the plugs as well. Car runs and drives great, gets arond 25mpg mixed street and fwy driving, which is a little better than my toyota pickup truck, so thats good in comparision. Just needs POWER...

Im a junkyard dog and have years of mix and match under my belt. I chose to do rx this time around because here in NorCal the early rx7 is very easy to find parts for in our boneyards, and thats a neccesity to a guy like me. Future plans are to swap in a mildly ported FC NA engine and trans into this one with a header and bigger carb and exhaust, and keep riding. My good colleague is a member of a small crew here in SF that are rotary freaks, all of them packing turbo and NA rotaries with a lot of knowledge of them. They swear by them and I want to see what all the hype is about. Only Way I know how to do that is to jump in and start swimming.

Atl_FB82 07-14-05 04:01 PM

Don't remember when I signed up, but I needed to run some searches and couldn't without registering :D

Anyway, I'm Mike from Atlanta and recently picked up an 82 GSL from the sister of a friend of mine for $1000. The paint was redone a few years back and a reman engine a couple years ago. The only thing it needs is an interior overhaul, but I took care of most of that with a quick Ebay search and a drive to Virginia. $120 later and I have a burgundy leather interior in pretty good shape. The drive up from Florida to Alabama (temporary storage) was a nightmare as my ACV decided to crap out on me, so I figured it was a good time to remove the rats nest. Runs like a champ now and now I'm just trying to make up my mind as to where I want to dump my next $$$ into it :rlaugh:

I had an '81 GSL in ugly-ass oxydized gold back in high school in the early 90's, but sold the car when the clutch went out. Transmission was down to 4 gears anyhow, so it was quickly becoming a non-daily driver. I also have a 2005 BMW M3 for when the Mazda isn't running or up on jackstands for an extended period :D

Anyway, here's a quick pic I took when it was in it's FIRST temporary storage in my friends garage in Florida. (his wife is still mad at me :rlaugh: )

Hi to all ,
My name is Brian I live in the armpit of Cali (Bakersfied) I am a proud owner of a 1st gen 85 RX7 gsl-se . I aquired her threw a impound lot I was working at . At a very good price . I'v only had her for a mnth and I'm all to excited to get this baby on the road .
She definatly needs work . Not really the body but the interior is shot (extreme heat /w the windows rolled up for at least a 1/2 yr :( ) The engine has 144k on it but she still is really strong (no smoke at all) she idles high and there are several leaks I must tend to (radiater, rear end) . But she is complete (nothing visably missing).
But she starts and runs very well . My instrument cluster was shorted out (tach burnt traces) .
Baby steps that about all I can say ....... great potenual and I can't wait to show her off .

You'll be seeing my posts around , I'm not afraid to ask questions to a well informed forum . I think I found the spot ;)
