New guy

Hey everyone my name is Jose and i am 17 years old. I admit. Im crazy about rotary's. I was first introduced to rotarys by my father about 3 years ago (thank god!) he has an 85 GS and it was very fast. Unfortunatly, it has a bad apex seal(s) and has no compression. I love rotarys so much and have learned many things since the day i got behind the wheel of one. Now these days my dad has to practicly tell me to shut-up since i cant seem to stop talking about rotarys. Now, I proudly own a a red 83 S in very good condition. It needs a some engine work but she still pulls strong.
Okay, i know some guys on this forum are hardcore rotor fans and probably have +10 yrs. under their belts working on rotarys. but i dont (dammit) but i guess we all share a common love for these great cars. So if a ever ask a dumb question one day dont be so hard me! Im sure ill learn alolt on this forum and i hope to be able to rebuild and service my own rex one day so im hoping you guys will help me out along the way thanks!
The new guy :D

Hey, my name is Julian. I live in Pennsylvania. Im working on my third 84. I honestly believe god put the rx-7 on earth.

the coolest part is it turns everyone's heads, and some people ask why anyone would deal with a rotary engine...i just tell them they will never understand. But everyone lines up to get a chance to redline it.

LateApex31 12-19-04 06:28 PM

Hey everyone, my name is Matt and my girlfriend and I just picked up a decent '79 for $200! No rust anywhere on the body, some surface rust underneath but everything is solid. She could use a paint job, as the silver paint is oxidized and without clearcoat.

http://www.concentric.net/~martine/rx7.jpg

Here is a pic of our new girl. She has 100k miles and the motor seems strong. I need to do something about the clogged cat and a bad idler arm bushing, but other than that, it seems pretty good. Hopefully I will get a spare motor built over the winter, and I plan to autocross it by the spring or summer and maybe go SCCA IT-7 racing in the future. Anyways, you guys have a great board here, I am excited about my new Mazda, especialy coming from the Honda world! :D

Dellorto 12-23-04 10:31 AM

Hi my name is Jimmy. My story starts in 1987:rock: I was 15 years old working @ ToysRus grave-yard shift ,stocking toys for all the good little children, saving my money for my first car. Originaly wanted an Audi quattro. I remember how they dominated in racing. Purchaced my 1983 black GSL for $3400 w/98000 miles before I could drive it (legaly). I was hooked, had the car 8 years & 100000 miles later (original motor) traded it for 96 accord coupe. they only gave me $500 trade in, should have kept the 7. Totaled the honda one year ago this month. Now I have a 1980 RX-7 with dellorto carb, stole it for $250 it is in need of some work but it runs. I do drive it to work now & then. Slowly restoring it at the body shop where I work as a damage appraiser. Needless to say I still have the fever. and it is contagious past it to my younger brother who is looking to buy a 5 letter (won't start keeps flooding. open to advice.) :bigthumb:

Hi everyone! My name is Martine and I'm Matt (LateApex31)'s girlfriend. I found the 7, but he started it and very bravely drove it home. lol. You have a very nice website here. :)

hmmm i never introduced my self here...

My name is Dan, I live up in cold Canada and im 17 years old.... anyways I purchased my rx7 about a year and a half ago... Not knowing anything when i bought it. I have researched and learned all kinds of cool stuff about it. Recently i have starting doing modifications to it and im having a blast. This car has shown me that after high school I want to have a mechanical job (i never really knew where i was going) Working on my rx7 has shown me that some hard work and determination really pays off.

Hmmm...guess it's my turn, just to see my own typing if nothing else. And I'm a woman so I will go on...at length. I fell in love with the 7 at the tender age of 17. My dad had a friend selling a red '87 TII and HE wanted it but I needed a car so...so much for the practical vehicle my mom wanted me in! Sparks (yes, I name my vehicles) served me well for a few years but as a poor college student I couldn't afford to give her the service she deserved. Right now she's sitting on 220k with the ORIGINAL engine. Still running well. Also note: that means 220k of PennDOT roads and PA winter daily driving grrrrr. So I sold her to the only person I would ever trust, my dad. ^_^ At least I'm welcome to visit and tinker and maybe reclaim her someday. She's going to be transformed to a racer since he'd rather not risk putting his 'vette through it's paces. Anyway, had to get a Blazer this year since I'm need a reliable vehicle to beat around in bad weather and discovered that I had severe rotary withdrawl. (I lasted a whole 3mo.) Thankfully jeremyt needed someone to take his '84 GSL-SE off his hands at the very the same time I started looking for a 1st gen (and my sign-on bonus from the Navy conveniently kicked in.) My favorite moment was calling my mom to have her listen: "Is that music?" "No mom, that's my car." That extra exhaust harmonic is wonderful. Just gotta say I love old-school. KISS. That's what the rotary's all about IMO. Came with some nice li'l mods: suspention, intake, wheels, etc. but it was all done with taste and nothing added makes her difficult. Apparently Foxy was previously owned and set up for amatuer racing by a chic so it seems she's definitely got that girl-car karma going on...but then again, I tell people the Indian that I ride is a girly bike. Still learning the ropes of rotaries of course, but everytime something breaks I aquire a new skill. o_0 Hopefully I can soon stop learning about fuel leaks, brake calipers, and the war on rust and worry about stereo, paint, and extra hp.

My real name is Robert. Im 47 and have a 79s that i bought in 1978. I was immediately bitten and have been a rx7 nut ever since. I almost had to sell my car when the kids came along but found a rear seat just in time to prevent losing my car to a family sedan (whew). It was a daily driver for years and was getting rather ragged when i decided to do a complete rebuild in spite of not really knowing what i was doing. My three month rebuild turned into four years. I completely took the car apart, installed a streetported 13B four port, 44phh mikuni, racing beat header-exhaust system, 83 lsd w/ rear disk, lowered front suspension,15x7 BBS, installed a 5speed( came w4 speed) also installed air conditioning ( it gets hot here in the south). I have had to learn everything from paint and body work (i made a paint booth in my garage) to carb tuning, but I have had an absolute ball. I did all the work myself except the leather interior that i had done by a buddy that usually does just street rod work, (It is really sharp)

On the personal side I have been a state trooper for 25 years, have been married 28 years, have a son, a daughter, a grandaughter and a shih tzu. I am new not only new to this forum but to any forum and am just learning my way around, thanks for your patience, i have learned alot already, mostly that i dont really know as much as i thought i did about rotories, There are some really smart and knowledgable people here, thanks again

sorry for the long post.

that is hthaving either engine or carb problems. The milage is 85,000 so I don't know
if the car sat too much in the past. Is there anyone out there who can advise me, I
am totally ignorant in this area.

Karl here, I just bought a 82 GS for my son who will be going off to college next year. Picking it up either this Saturday, or if that doesn't happen , then beginning of March when I return from overseas. The seller is a friend of mine so it's not going to disappear if I don't get it Saturday. I have been scouring the boards here in preparation of picking up the GS and find that I think I'm going to have to get one of these for my very own too! I presently drive a 2004 Mazda6S (which is just awesome!) and that is my first Mazda. My wife doesn't know it yet, but I'm having visions of at least two or three of these beauties in the driveway in the coming months

Little personal stuff, I'm a Coast Guard Chief Boatswains Mate, just turning the dial at twenty years this month, leaving on deployment in 2 days but I'm going to be asking LOTS of questions when I get back in March! (gonna have questions on the M6 boards as well!)

Looking forward to getting down to business reworking this 82 GS! :whip:

Huh,been posting here for a little while now and never noticed this......

"Can you hear me now.....good!" OK...........here goes.......

Hi.My name is Steve Pavlos(Greek not,Spanish).Ive lived in beautiful nothern CA,all my life.Really nice up here, not nearly the same feel as the "traditional" CA sterotype.I cleared out of high school pretty easily, but didnt have much interest in college.Worked as a landscaper with my father for 5 years(made mucho bucks at it too,who would have thought?)After high school I had enough though and wanted a more interesting job, even if it didnt pay as much.

Ill be 29 this year and I have worked as a medium and heavy equipment mechanic at my buddies rental shops for almost 10 years.I also handle ski and snowboard tech in the winter at the same shop. Its a cool job, requires in field repairs, creativity and its never the same day twice. And the winter snow bunnies are nice too.
I enjoy my 2 sportbikes and 1 cruiser, motoX on occasion(KTM 250),love rock crawling in the summer, and mostly just relaxing after a hard day's work and watching some cartoons.I dont like to take the world too seriously if im not working, and I put in a lot of hours since its a friends and family type locally owned buisness.

Ive had my 84 GS for about 10 years now.My brother had an 81 GS when I was a kid and I used to sneak it out when he wasnt looking. My previous car was my moms old 78 GLC which I swapped a Chevy V-6 into during highschool. After that car got too impractical I spotted my GS in the paper as an abandoned junker for 400 bucks. The next 8 or 9 years were used to hone my build skills on the FB.First a pumped up Yaw carbed 12A,then it all was swapped onto a 76 13B.When the need for power turned to EFI,I immediatly went for a TII swap.First S4,then a Mazdatrix built streetport S5 and a TO4B hybrid. My current setup is CA smog legal and puts out about 300 reliable, daily driven HP.
Over the last 5-6 years Ive been a regular on the Mazspeed forum and Im still the #2 poster, however my numbers have dropped a bit since I have very little of the original 1st gen's mecanicals left in my widebody monster. Its currently the CAR OF THE MONTH there if anyone wants specs.I started posting here out of curiosity and because more people were asking me about TII swap specifics.Currently the RX is my only car until the Chevy V-6 Samurai is finished(the GLC had to go,but I wanted to ressurect it's spirit in another vehicle)
Future plans are to stop spending money on the RX,save up to buy one of these local, ridiculously overpriced houses in the area, and find a woman who is very understanding so I can marry her and drive her crazy with my greasy laundry.....heh,heh.

tasty danish 01-18-05 12:16 AM

name's john, i'm 17 and have been a car guy ever since i could remember.
got my start helping my stepdad build an engine for his 73 vette.
drove a $200 beater (i mean, i really rusty POS) around for about 6months after i turned 16 till i could afford my first real car: a mint 92 Taurus SHO.
love that thing and was content with it till i picked up an 83 gsl with blown motor for free.
i now plan to restore the 7 into a strictly track car, the sho is quick enough for an everyday grocery getter and if i'm going to have a 2nd car, i want something outrageous.

if anyone is in the kansas city area and could get me a deal on autox driving school, give me an email :D

my other intrests include computers (programming and hardware), jiu-jitsu (won nationals 2 years back), guns/ airsoft, the special highschool diploma program i'm in that consists of all uber-classes :bigthumb: and my lovely girlfriend of ump-teen years.

nice you make you-all's acquaintance

My name is jerry and a too love 7's. I own an 81 with a street-ported 12a w/600 cfm carb and bonez street pipes. I paid 600 for mine in rough shape but when its all you ever wanted anything is good. I had it built about 2 years ago, ( street-ported), and have loved it ever since. I am currently fighting a t2 into it and not having a very good time. The wiring sux, as most of you know, but i will prevail. Will put larger brakes and wheels, from the t2 of course, and then, yes then, i will have the car of my dreams. I wiil get pics in soon. Nice to meet every one!!

31rx7 01-21-05 07:11 AM

My name is Rich and I am 46. Happily married 22 years, 2 kids - 19yr girl, 16yr boy. I am now on my seventh 1st gen. Purchased an 83 S new, traded for an 82 GSL, which I had for 8 years, then went without for 10 years or so as I raced FWD cars in Showroom Stock. Got out of that, and purchased an 81 prepped for ITA (recently sold), then an 85 GS which I have as a CSP autocross / street car. Currently have another 81 which I am (re)building as an EP car. I have had three parts cars mixed in with these. Have been active in SCCA for 20+ years. Wife and I did the Solo II Nat's from 1984 through 1991, and 1995 - 1997, Runoff's in 1993 and 1994, wife in 1995.

The EP car is Jesse Prather's old car. He parted the car out after the Runoff's this year, and I bought the tub which has a very nice cage, the fiberglass, lexan windows, front suspension, and all the fab work done. I need to do some body repair, obtain / install the drivetrain, cooling system, pedals, fuel cell, brakes, instruments, rear end and suspension, etc.

The 85 GS is a local car I purchased off eBay that is surprisingly rust free. I have all records for it, and was never driven in the winter until 2001. It is somewhat of a budget CSP car in that I purchased most of the parts very reasonably: F&R Susp Tech sway bars - $50, Front Koni''s - $75, Rear Tokico's - $ 50, Weber 45 DCOE setup - $350, Front susp bushings - $10, LSD - $100, etc. My approach to this car has been to carefully watch for certain parts that are a deal, and then jump on them, so it has taken me awhile to get near to where I think the car should be. Like any modified car, this car is getting nearer to the point were it is not much fun to drive on the street, but still not bad for occasional drives.

Budget permitting, at some point I would like to obtain a nice, stock, low mileage car for long term collection.

My near term goals (car-wise) are to get back to divisional (maybe national) competitive levels of Solo II while prepping my EP car to qualify for the Runoffs in 2006. Plan on Rotary Revolution this spring with the 85 GS for the autocross and road course. Probably will instruct at the Driver's School.

I like these cars in that they are reasonably priced, easy to work on and simple to understand, and respond well to mods. I can buy / sell parts here and on eBay, and it is almost self funding.

BTW, street cars are 2001 Lexus IS300 (mine), 1994 Infiniti J30 (wife's; for sale), 1997 GMC Yukon (tow vehicle).

MacDog 01-26-05 06:38 PM

okay, just read five pages straight and I'm only a third through, and over two years ago! Promise I'll come back to it.

My name is Sean Thomas MacGill, and I used to work as a stagehand and somehow picked up the nickname Mac, which I like. I'm 34 which I have mixed feeling about. I always hated being a stagehand, and in 2000 I got the chance to stop being one by rupturing a disc in my back. I couldn't walk for a year, wife left me, got wiped out by medical bills, was homeless for three months. I was a rubber tramp, living out of my car (1980 Volvo wagon, don't laugh, she was good to me) in LA. I'd been on the outs with my folks, but swallowed my pride, came back east, and now my Mom is helping me get through college, a little late, but hey.

Until yesterday I hadn't driven anything at all in almost two years, lived and worked in downtown DC, who needs a car. Then right next to the bustop was this beautiful car at a price I could handle. At the time I didn't know a thing about rotarys. She's a little beat up, interior is shot, but a great heart and very, very sexy (kinda like me). I called the guy selling it and took her for a spin. I've had sex with my ex-wife that wasn't that good! I take possession tommorrow. She belonged to a street racer whose taking a government sponsored vacation right now, and a few modification that I can't be sure of the specifics right now. Custom exhaust. 14" alloy rims and slicks (which alone are probably worth what I'm paying). The guy who sold it to me say that the car is known and feared around town. I've only been here for 6 months, and no one fears me on my bicycle (though it's a Raleigh, darn fine bike!!!!), but when I was a kid my brothers and I raised some hell in rural Vermont. We used to race out there, I had a modified Bronco V-8 for offroad (seems like we were always pulling it out of some mudhole in the middle of nowhere), and a sweet little jetta that got ridden into the ground. I had lent it to someone when I was drunk and didn't remember who, and it sort of dissappeared for a year. Some guy found it an abandoned barn with just about everything on it wrecked, bought it off of me for $250. All I can say is that street racing still tempts me, but more than a few of the guys I used to drag with are dead, all of them in their cars.

She's a bit of a project, my rex, but it's been a long time since I got my hands greasy. I'm thinking about putting my carpentry experience to work and custom out the interior with cherry, ebony and black leather. It's got some great dials, including a tachometer about 6" across. I'm thinking about really making her fancy, in ten years these 85's will be car show cars. GPS navigation. Engine assist computer with graphic display. NOS. Rearview camera. 10 CD changer. The kind of car that could win any race it entered, but is so nice you don't want to risk it. Not sure where I'm going to get the money for that, but I can dream right. And maybe if the money's right, I'll race for old time's sake.

akinvan 02-17-05 06:15 AM

Hello,

My name is topy and I live in Georgia. I've lurked here for a while getting details about the RX-7. I recently bought one on a whim, I love japanese sports cars, I have two CRXs---a milder type of rex. At first when I bought the car I was intimidated, because I found lots of owners on the internet who abandoned the cars because of the rare parts and also because most mechanics don't know anything about them but this site has helped to eliminate all my fears.

My car is a 1985 RX-7 GS 5 speed. It's very fast and appears to have a custom exhaust, unfortunately it has one of those ugly wings on the back of it, the wing appears to be made from real carbon fiber but I hate it nevertheless and will be removing it. I'll probably try to sell it. Anyway from the research I've done it appears the engine in the 1985 mazdas were changed to the 13b engines but this one says 12a on the engine. Did I make a mistake or has the engine been replaced. The engine also feels too strong, like it's being modified, is there any way I can check this, I can spin the tires, taking off in first gear and the car can do 60 comfortably in 3rd gear.

Thanks for any answers you can give.

racermike 02-17-05 08:00 AM

akinvan, welcome.

12A motor is carbed, 13B is fuel injected (GSL-SE), both were sold in '84 & '85.

Todd Staples 02-17-05 11:44 AM

My name is Todd, 51 and still in my first childhood and married to the same lovely woman for over 30 years. I am a fuel mangager for a 500 unit trucking company so I get the chance to spend about $2.5 million of their dollars a month. I am also a preacher of the Gospel of the Living Lord, Jesus Christ and have pastored the same church for over 12 years. So I am truly blessed. Bought the first 7 little over a year ago, since then have had 3, 2 running and 1 parts car with another parts car on the way, they are kind of like babies; they are cute, need a lot of TLC, can make a mess at times and seem to multiply when you least expect it. Presently restoring an 85GS. Building a 12a SP with Holly intake and 600 Edelbrock and RB headers. Running 15" CSA wheels with 205/50's. Again being like a baby, they are fun to play with, but can wear you out at times, and are a real joy. Didn't know a thing about Rotarys before I bought one, but learning quickly. I want to thank everyone for their advice, some needed parts at times, patience and understanding dealing with a Rotary newbie. Would also like to thank those responsible for making this website such a pleasure. I will try to post a thread on my restoration and rebuild.

Scourge 02-22-05 12:18 PM

Hi

My name is Trevor, I live in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and am currently a student. I've owned 2 FBs. An 83 GS (crashed) and currently drive (when the snow's gone) an 85 GSL. I fell in love with the 7 when my dad brought me my first one, the 83. I didn't know much about them at the time, but after the first rip around the block in it I loved it. It pulled strong, sounded good, looked sexy.

I've done an engine swap on my new FB, bought it with a blown motor, and perform all the maintainance and tinkering on it. I've been lurking on these forums for quite some time, and gained much knowledge from the guru's on here.

I'll share my limited knowledge when needed, and hopefully continue to learn more. I'll also do my best to stay out of the lounge :titty:

PS I'll get some pics posted when I get home

Midlife Crisis Car

Hi my name is Jon.

My RX-7 story stated in 1979. My dad was 42 at the time and I was 12. We had looked at a few vettes, porches and vw sciroccos and then one day we went to take a test drive in an RX7. Still remember coming back to the auto dealer and all the sales staff was waiting with a nervous looks on their faces. Must have been how dad had taken off out of the lot. Long story short dad bought the car 79 S 5 speed. It was his all year around driver. In Mid 80's I purchased from dad and did have it repainted. Years of everyday driving in the winter took its toll and sold it in the early 90's. Haven't had a fun car since. Mostly work cars for my computer consulting business.

Bit about my dad. He has had his share of fun cars. 55 Chev, 58 Chev Convertible, 61 Austin Healey, 64 corvette, 67 442, 79 RX, 90 Eagle Talon AWD Turbo. I was born in late 66 and needed a "family car", 64 corvette had no back seats, so of course he purchased the Olds 442. Dad retired from the post office in 90 (Eagle Talon retirement car)

Other then the 79 RX7 I've had only one other fun car, 74 Dodge Charger. A month or so ago me and dad were talking about cars. Both agreed the RX7 was a very fun car to drive and also to open the hood and talk to people about the rotary engine. He told me of all the cars he had it was the one he liked the most for an all around car to drive. Handling, speed and reliablility. Eagle Talon had it in the snow and was a close second.

Last month a found a 85 RX7 on ebay about 250 miles from me. It was driven summers only and shows. Great interior and no rust anywhere. Shortly after hitting the buy it now button gave dad a call. His only comments were sounds like something he would do and can he drive it.

Picked up the car last sunday and drove it home. Was a great 250 mile ride home. Wished it was a longer drive. It was nice out yesterday so took it out for the day. Registered it with DMV, showed it around, I belong to the local Rotary Club (service club nothing to do with Rotary Engines) so drove my Rotary to Rotary. Took it for a wash. Parked it back in the garage. Its snowing today so have one of my other cars out today.

RustyRotary 03-17-05 08:05 PM

Hey, my name's Steve, I'm 17, and I have been stricken with rotary fever. I have a long and fairly interesting story, but I'll stick to the basics since, well, it's a long story.

Last November I bought my first RX-7, a rust/silver 1983 GS. At the time, I thought that 1G's were ugly and powerless. I only bought it because I was sick of driving an automatic, and I figured it'd handle pretty well. I bought it for $150 off a kid named Rob in my independent study automotive class, who had recently purchased it for $500 from a hick. He sold it because he figured he had gotten in over his head and the work that needed to be done to it was out of his budget.

The car was in a pretty lowly state when I bought it, and I actually was quite depressed right after I bought it because all of the sudden it occurred to me that I had just bought a peice of crap that belonged at a swap meet or a junk yard. The interior had been almost completely stripped (the door panels and rear trim peices had been thrown away by stupid kids in the class when Rob still owned it), the rear wheelwells looked like swiss cheese, with maybe 40-50% of each side rusted straight through. It had no winshield wipers, the air conditioning was broken, there was no passenger seat, the rear passenger glass had been shattered by a kid who closed the hatch too hard, the clutch stuck all the time, the brakes hardly worked at all, it leaked tons of oil and coolant, the list goes on and on.

After a while I had solved a few minor problems, but the car still was still a peice of crap. A month or so after I bought the car, Rob decided that he wanted to buy another one. This one was an '85 GSL he got on ebay from some cracked out hippies in Pittsburgh for $80. We were under the impression that it was in better condition than the one I had, but after he drove 700 miles to get it, it turned out that it was in far worse condition than we could have ever imagined. So Rob's dreams were shattered once again.

Though what we thought was a lemon turned out to be a gold mine. Mounted on the engine was a Mikuni carb with a new intake manifold, Racing Beat headers, and a full RB cat-back exhaust. The headers were rusty and the exhaust had a leak, but other than that they were in great condition. Also, we got doorpanels, rear trim pieces, seats, a cool steering wheel, winshield wipers, a replacement window, and countless other little things that we needed. All for $80. Well, at this point, Rob decided he wanted to take my car back. I hadn't actually gotten the title from the woman he bought it from, so there wasn't much I could do about it. In the end, we agreed that we would both split the costs for working on it and he would sell me the car back when he heads to basic training (about 3 months from now).

Only recently were we able to finish puting all of the parts in. We still haven't had the carb properly tuned, as it has a broken idle adjust screw which is messing things up a lot (it is essentially screwed in as far as humanly possible). Lots of smoke, bogs down when you stomp on the gas, etc. It's very quick though, and I imagine it'll be a lot quicker once it's tuned.

Well, that turned out longer than I though it'd be. Congrats to those who read all of it lol. By the way, 1G's are now the coolest in my mind, and RX-7's are all that I think about. If I'm not out cruising with the roof off and stomping Honda's, I'm working on it, and if I'm not working on it I'm either reading about RX-7's or driving them in Gran Turismo. So, I joined this forum.

I look forward to talking about Wankel cars with all of you!

Hey,

My name is Steve and I just joined today. I am the 4th owner of a 2 family '83 GSL. My younger brother bought the car used in 85 and had it until 87 when he got a ticket. He sold the car to my mom who sold it to me in 04 for $500.00! :bigthumb: The car is in pretty good shape. The clear coat is fading fast and the motor will put some oil on the exhaust if you run it above 3 grand for very long. I've always preferred the 1st gen body ever since a friend of mine in high school had a 79.

I had always remembered how the power delivery was so smooth...talk about zoom-zoom. When my brother let me drive his back in 86, I was hooked.

It has taken awhile, but now she is mine. Doing twenty in the navy, I kept the hobbies to racketball and computers. Small and easy to pack up and move. I retired in Jan 04 and now that I've settled down, I can finally get into something that I've always wanted to do. I've met a couple of people in the Charleston, SC area and next month I going to my first meet. I'm pretty excited about learning and working on this cool car.

And it's pretty fun to mess with the V-Tech crowd! :bigthumb:
