Getting a first gen, WOOT!

For free to boot! Turns out my uncle has one of the 1st gens my cousin used to drive, and he also has an FC engine, and I'm getting both. He said the engine in the 1st gen doesn't run that well and they were going to swap in the FC engine but the mounts didn't line up, go figure. I think I heard of that before but I can't remember if anyone had done it. I told him if the engine isn't from a TII I'd just leave the original engine in it anyway. I'm PSYCHED!!!

Cool. Welcome to the 1st gen section. What year/model is it? To drop an FC engine in (TII included), you will need the front cover and the oil pan off of a GSL-SE. All the 1st gens mount the engine off of the front cover instead of near the center of the engine like the FCs do.

I'm not sure of all the info yet. My Dad said he didn't want to ask him too many questions about it, just get it from him, I guess before he changed his mind, haha. I mean he IS my uncle though, I don't think we really have to worry about all that, haha. I would only drop in the FC engine if it's a TII or 13B-RE, but we're talking about the backwoods of Illinois here so I'm really not counting on either of those, haha. I imagine it's a regular non-turbo, but you never know, stranger things have happened.

if its an FC engine, it is a 13B-RE. a turbo II engine would require a T2 wiring harness and an FC trans and the SE front cover and oil pan and a ton of work. pics please(when you get them).

^I thought the 13B-RE was a special engine from Japan that only came in the Cosmos? I'll post the pics soon. I'm going home on leave next week, so it's perfect timing. I'm thinking about trying to leave it at my Dad's so I can have something to do when I go home on leave and everyone else is at work, and so I can have a car to drive if I fly home. Not to mention I don't really have room for it here, haha. Now if I can just find an FC shell for free I can have two free cars! I've always wanted all three gens.

Even the FC NA will give you an increase in hp over the 12A. But if you want to play with the 12A, rebuild and porting, maybe turbo, you can pull more hp out of it's 4-port configuration than you can the 13B 6-port, turbo aside.

Yeah I'm not sure what I'm going to do with all of it just yet. Til I get the FD done I'll probably just get it running right and get a title. Thank you all for the ideas though. I'm not too knowledgeable about the different ports just yet but I'll learn.

Oh trochoid, I just noticed you're from St. Joe. I lived in Cape Girardeau for about 6 years too. I know it's on the other side of MO, just thought I'd mention that, haha. My ex gf lives in Independence though, haha.

You should probably just get the car and then decide for yourself if the engine is bad. Could just be bad tuning or some minor issue. Congrats on the new car.

Thanks! Yeah I'm not really worried about it, it's not like I'm hurting for another car, I'm just really happy to get another RX-7 I was wanting to get without having to pay for it. It's probably not bad anyway, that's why I was planning on keeping the 12A. Like I said, this is in the backwoods of Illinois where I used to live, I'm pretty sure there aren't too many people, if anyone, around there that know about rotaries, so at this point I'm assuming their assessment is faulty.

Great score. That is awesome... makes me wish that part of my family were into imports rather than American muscle. Who knows what I'd be able to pick up if that were the case.

The coveted Cosmo engine is a 3 rotor, 20B.

Nope, the taillights are intact. Are you talking about the strap going along the back? If so, that's while it was on the trailer. The marker on the passenger front corner is broken, but that's the only one that's broken. I believe all the other lights and such are intact.

^and I know the Cosmo had a 3 rotor 20B. I was referring to an FC that was built by Speed Machine that had a 13B-RE from a Cosmo, or so it said. And there was an FD someone was talking about here on the forums that had one too.

Well, no one in my family is really into cars at all, not so much to be just domestic or import anyway. It's been more of a subconcious thing or just dumb luck. My Dad had an '82 when I was young and my brother got it and ended up beating the **** out of it. Not to mention my Dad had sideswiped it pulling out of the driveway one day. So I told him "try not to sideswipe this one", haha. I thought my cousin might have been the "man" in the relationship (she's a lesbo) and knew her cars well, but he said she didn't really care what it was, it was just a car to her, so it's just dumb luck for me that it was a 7 and it's been sitting out there for years in the woods out in the country where I grew up. I think it's in pretty damn good condition considering, especially the interior. I just wish I had known it was there before. My uncle just got tired of waiting for my cousin to get the title. Thanks guys!

Update: turns out my uncle has another 7 on his property that he forgot about, so my Dad is gonna try to get that one for me too, also for free. He thinks it's a 1st gen also but he's not sure yet. If it's an FC it will round out my collection, but I'm just ecstatic I'm getting another one, haha. Oh, and I found an RX-3 in GREAT condition in my area too. Not for sale, but it might be soon.

Due to the rarity, I'd be inclined to trade off all of the 7s, (maybe keep the 3rd gen if I were you), and get that old school RX3. As it is, I have too many projects now.

Cool, even better you got it for free. I would drop in the fc engine even if its n/a. I t will have a lot more power than the 12a. Good job and grabbing it.

Well the 3 isn't for sale yet, but I think he might end up selling it. He was still eager to talk about it and he was super nice, but he said he just doesn't have the love for it that he used to. He still doesn't want to see it turned into a race car though, and I wouldn't do that. If I got that RX-3, I'd just do the little bit of work to turn it back to near-mint condition. It's already in really good shape...no broken lights, the paint is still in good condition overall, with a few places where it's bubbling from what looks like rust underneath, but not real bad, the interior is in good condition, all around a good looking car. But I think I'm gonna keep all of them though, if I can, haha. This cop that lives across the street from my Dad's garage wants to buy the 1st gen that I already have, but I'm not sure yet. I just love these cars so much I can't see parting with any of them.

UPDATE: I was home in May and went out on the old property with my Dad, and we found the other RX-7 that's out in the woods. It's an SA, not sure what year though. And it's pretty beat up, rusted along the bottom, the inside is trashed, the doors won't even open. It's been out there so long small trees have actually grown up around it. So while we were looking at that, I look to my right and see an FC. WOW. The only problem is it's totalled (I think it's the one we got the FC engine from). It has NO running gear whatsoever, axles or anything, just sitting right on the ground. The front is smashed in, no hood, no engine, driver's door is pulled off and in the hatch...it's all around in pretty bad shape. Trees are grown up around that one too, I'd still like to get it though, if for nothing more than just a piece of art.

They had all kinds of other cars and junk out there too. There was an old Monte Carlo, about a '75 model, an old *****'s and a bunch of other cars. There were also old washers and dryers, air conditioners, etc. out there, haha. And Dad and I walked out with about 6 tics a piece, that wasn't cool, haha.
