general engine question: is the 82 and 83 12a the same?

the reason i ask is that the motor went out on the 83 and im lookin into getting another motor or swapping a 5.0 into it but funds are not sufficent so a rotary is in the horizon
i know someone selling an 82 for cheapp and i was thinking if that would go in the 83?
any engine differences?how bout wiring?
im trying to make this as simple as possible- will i have any problems?
thanks in advance

I believe in 83' the oil cooler switched from the front mount to the beehive oil cooler under the oil filter. If you dont mind swapping over to the older style front mount oil cooler (which is better) then do it, wiring shouldnt be a problem either, Id say go for it.

No difference. Use your existing oil cooler, too. It'll drop in and your wiring harness will match, too.

83 had lighter rotors, and a heavier counterbalance. and the oil cooler.

I did exactly what you're talking about. I swapped in an '82 engine since the '83 was leaking oil out onto the exhaust manifold (fire waiting to happen). Also have an '84 carb on it and the '83 tranny still in there. I have the front mount oil cooler instead too, much, much better than the water-to-oil cooler.
