I recently started a thread on this althought it's more generic. You could go to the search button in the uper righthand corner and look there but you'll have to sift through it.

did we really get the 12aT off the factory floor DownUnder? Any evidence? I'm not being picky but a friend is very keen to find out.
I thought WA might have got jap import spec 1st gen rx7's but I was pretty sure they weren't via Mazda Australia.

12AT was never exported from Japan. Australia received three different series all designated SA. The s1 and s2 had the 12A with 100hp specs, s3 had the 12A with larger ports producing about 110fwhp.
Stock 1/4 times varied with the road tester but were around 16.8 and 16.5 seconds. The 13B engined SE time was around 16.0 seconds.
While Australia did not get the SE, numerous 13B engines were dropped in as aftermarket modifications. These include 13B-4p, 13B-6p, various 13BT and 13B REW models and the occasional 20B and 12AT. Depending on modifications/engine transplants the Aussie gen 1s are capable of 10 second to 16 second passes.

Hey I am aussie too... Just got a kinda beat-up 1st gen 1980 Rx-7 12a. Mine appears to be fully imported... ie. Japanese everywhere... I took it to the mazda dealer here and they said it was imported. Needs some work, but I love them. They seller was asking 2000 for it but I got 'em down to 800 and I can thrash my mate in his 2001 lancer (tho it only a 1.5) it dents his ego. Anyone from western australia? If so does anyone know of good places to buy an EFI 13b?

A friend has a 12aT 1st gen that they were told was Australian Factory delivered as the "Greg Hansford Special" - it also has a wheel arch flare kit and front & rear spoilers. It looks to be Aust delivered, and the install look factory. So they are unsure. But they could find no evidence of 12aT's coming from the factory - they have gone to the extent of tracing distribution details of batches of chassis numbers with mazda Australia.
Street registered 1st gens have run 9's - a777 who posts on rx7club (usually tech section) pulled one at the jamboree on a stock 2nd gen gear box.
check my local rotor club www.react.org.au for pics of our 1st gens. For some reason we have about 5 or 6 white ones amongst us.

The Greg Hansford Special, named after the Bathurst Race driver, came with a stock 12A. The added parts were body cosmetic and wheels to make the RX-7 look fast. As such there was no need for ADR approval. It was not a Mazda factory version but an aftermarket add-on as was the similar Alan Moffit version. Around 1982-84 there were about 12 Australian companies offering modified RX-7s from Targa tops to 13B carb/turbo set ups.
Some years later when the craze was to imporrt second hand 12AT engines for earlier RXs, several RX-7s had variously modified 12ATs dropped in. Apart from the lack of the Rotary Turbo badges, the usual give away is the Australian gauge cluster rather than the Japanese cluster with a boost gauge with the tach.
A few genuine !2AT cars have been imported recently under the second hand concession regulations, but the ADR compliance plates are different from the offically imported 12A Gen 1. The price range is $12-15,000 and they still need a decent turbo, intercooler and ecu to make them perform!

asmodeuss- try Dyson Rotary they offer a good DIY package of all the parts needed for the 13BT swap at around $6000 to save labour costs.
Their website lists a range of engines if you just want an 'as it comes' motor. If you want anything specific for WA you could also try asking on www.ausrotary.com

Not sure if anyone posted this yet, i don't feel like reading everything.
GSL-SEs had different options, P/S and no P/S is just an example.
They run between a 15.9 and 16.1 depending on how many options are on the car.
