The trap door is in the hose leading to the tank.

You need to 'manually' open it when filling the tank from a can...

WTF? why would there be a "trap door" in the back of the car so you can access the top of the gas tank? Talk about a hazard. Get rear-ended hard enough, and your gas tank could rupture. If you had a so-called "trap door" going into the cabin, you'd have a big *** fire inside your car. Please think before you ask stupid questions.

Alot of cars have them. Most of the time to get to the fuel pump. Thant way you dont have to dop the tank and on some cars the exhuast. O and to answer your question No 1st gens dont.

No there is no trap door for access to the top of the tank since the fuel pump is in front of the gas tank unlike the 2nd gen...

There are two trap doors to remove the bumper though.

No trap door on 1 st gens unlike the 2nd gens where you can get to the fuel pump on the floor of your trunk. What Nick said ^^

Its fairly easy, you just have to unplug the sending unit (I explain where to find it below), 2 bolts holding the straps up as well as the 3 bolts holding the filler tube neck in place, once youve got those out it will drop down low enough to get the fuel, return, and vent lines off the top. Just make sure the tank is completely drained from the plug on the bottom before you start.

If you just need to get at the level sending unit, pull of your drivers side rear wheel, and the plastic protector piece off and voilla, your sending unit. Youll need to do this anyway if you want to drop the tank.

The most common reason for the fuel guage to stop working is because the little ground wire seperate from the plug has broken off, its usually possible to solder on a wire if your handy with the soldering iron...If not, either search for the repair that has been covered here before or get a new sender.

oh, ya it does suck that we don't have that niffty panel. Getting the tank out isn't bad, it's just getting the straps back on is the nightmare.

Cable not hooked up at the transmission or/and the back of the gauge. Gently pull the cable from under the hood, at the firewall to see if it comes. If it does then it's disconnected under the dash.

Remove the plastic wheelwell cover behind the driver's side wheel. You will see the sending unit behind that panel. The sending unit can be removed without dropping the tank, but the screws will most likely strip or snap. If you need to mess with the supply/return/vent lines, the tank needs to be dropped.

As far as the speedo goes, if it is connected at both ends, then disconnect it at the tranny and check the inner driver cable. If both ends are good, check the drive gear in the tranny.

The 'trap door' threw me, try access cover plate next time, lol.

It is unlikely, but theres a chance it could be the guage isnt there? I know it usually shouldnt fail, but im sure it is possible that it sticks. Mine used to make some gnarly sounds in the winter as I sped up.
Im guessing that unless it broke or became disconnected, the PO probably unhooked it to stop racking up the miles.

When the speedo cable starts making noise, then it needs lubed. If it sticks enough it can snap. For the speedo gausge itself to fail, the gears would be stripping out. I've seen this on other cars where the only part working was the trip odometer. That was an odd one.

I was thinking that the gas tank trap door was something that trapped little animals or something that were trying to get into your car (not really, but I had no clue what he was really talking about), just some sort of contraption.

Anyway, if you have a gas leak then I suggest you find out if it is a line or the tank quickly. If it is the tank then seal that bitch up. If it is the line, then replace the line asap.

That was only an option on the upper models.
