Gas Tank Pressure

Gas Tank Pressure
I've got a Holley on my 12A. The fuel return line which is usually on the stock Nikki is plugged since it isn't used on the Holley. Yesterday I was driving and after coming home, I smelled gas from the car. When I popped the hood, I saw that gas was pushing past the plug (must have been pressurized). I opened the fuel cap and there was a lot of pressure relieved. Does this mean that I have an issue with my charcoal canister? Isn't that supposed to dissipate gas tank gasses? Do I just replace the charcoal canister or should I check other things first to get to the root of the problem?
Thanks a lot!

Sounds like the canister has outlived it's usefulness or you made a change in the tank venting in the rear of the car when you upgraded the fuel pump. I have mine unhooked at the check valve that is bolted to the bottom of the body, just forward of the spare tire well. Is this the best thing to do, probably not.

Instead of unhooking it there, should I unhook it at the firewall? I can always get another canister I guess, but until then and since I have not emissions requirement where I live, I can just bypass it right?
Did you remove it and all the lines after the check vavle altogether?

The tank has to be kept in an air-starved condition so that it doesn't blow up when the wiper on the fuel gauge sending unit arcs (which is normal)
You need to keep this in mind when changing things around.
