My '79 gets about 21 miles per gallon with like 70/30% highway/city miles. I'm sure if my carb was tuned a little better I could squeeze out a few more miles. I think I might be able to get like 25mpg if I only drove on the interstate and never ran into any traffic. I'll have to ask my mom what she said she got out of it one time. She said she got the best gas milage going like 80 for like a whole trip (of course this would have been in the early '80s when the engine was in tip-top shape).
PS: congrats on getting the best year for a first gen. (Free?)

The original owner told me before he sold the car to the guy before me (as in, the way the car was how I have it now, if that makes any sense), he got about 17 MPG, mostly city. This is an 83, but it can't be THAT different.

84SE (see signature line), and I get 17-18 city, and about 19-20 highway. Mixed, I usually get about 17.8 or so, and this is consistent over many, many fill-ups.

I normally shift at about 5500 in 1st/2nd, and cruise at 4k rpm at 50mph in town. HTH,

here's what i can add....

i have a 79 and currently with header and electronic ignition (and driving sanely) get about 22mpg. before i did the mods, i was gettin about 19mpg. BY FAR the biggest single improvement was getting rid of that points ignition. any distributor from 81-85 drops right in. I got mine from a pull it yourself yard and together with 2 new coils, cap and rotor, it was well under 100 bucks to swap out. it so simplified life for me i can't say enuff. if you need more detailed info on how to do it, let me know. (of course the header was a heckuva lotta help too, but that involves quite a bit more labor- especially when smog checks come around)
anyways, hope that helps ya out- tom

thanks, yeah it's been parked outside for a while now beacuse it's stuck in 3rd gear. Basically i'm just gonna take it off his hands. I'm only gonna hwy use it to drive to work. Got my 3rd gen for my frills. But over 20 is good enough for me, oh yeah can you use 87 in a n/a I dont see why not since detonation shouldn't be a problem.

you can use 87. most people run that in their first gens. i usually get around 17.5 or so city and around 22-24 when mostly highway and little city driving. my car isnt in great shape though so im sure it could get better if it were to have a carb rebuild and some work on the ignition.

I drove my 86 base model to florida and back. Let's see, 16 gal tank, 1100 miles, 2 fill ups, i guess that averages to about 35, and i was trying to tackle the mountains through virginia and west virginia. Another thing, i was going about 120 mph most of the way
