Great thread on this. Couple questions;
How high an output can you go with the alernator without frying ****? What's to be gained by going to a much higher amperage?
My fuel pump oscilates when I turn on my singal light, and it changes to a lower pitch when I turn on the headlights.
It's, ya know- One of them noisy-*** CARTER pumps! I'm wondering if my ignition is all it can be if my alternator is'nt putting out enough juice.

Also, what are the advantages to fusable links? Why did'nt Mazda just have those things in with the fuse box with appropriate amp rated fuses?

BTW, I have a large amp and decent stereo, and I plan on installing fog lights and an elecrtic fan in the future. Possibly reinstalling the AC.
Suggested alternators?
Are there any from other car makes that will fit without bracket modification? (Give amperage rating if you know!)

The second gen alt's are higher amp's, I will find out how much more. You will want to do this mod with all of your add ons requiring extra juice. My headlights used to dim at idle and when I hit the brakes. This solved the problem. The old alt's just can't handle all the stuff we are putting on our cars nowdays. But, I seriously doubt if it will help the modulating on the Carter. I have the same problem, even after the upgraded alt.
The best second gen alt is from a T2. But any second gen alt will do.
The reason to get rid of the fusible links is just insurance. When the alt kicks in it gives the electrical system a shot (surge), I would not want to find out that the fusible links are not up to the job.

It is really pretty simple, it is a two stage upgrade. Number one is the alternator, we are installing a second gen alternator in our first gen cars because the second gen's have a greater amp output. The second stage is eliminating the old style fusible links for a newer fuse block.

The TII alternator is rated at 80 amps...to go higher would mean aftermarket starting at a guesstimated $150 unless v8kilr or Mike-P-28 can cut us some serious deals on a Stinger or equivalent alternator... The Carter is the cause if your electrical problems, sterling!!
