fusable links

what does each link control, 1,2,3 thanks,,,,,

Directfreak 03-21-02 10:14 AM

I think it says it right on them

On my SE, I believe it's

Headlamp Motors
Headlamps
Fuel Injection.

On your GSL it may be slightly different,

FJ 03-21-02 12:20 PM

On the GSL, top to bottom, it's
Headlight motors (brown)
Main (black)
Headlights (brown)

The -SE has a separate block with two links
Injection (green)
computer (brown)

-John.

Donna,
Do your self a favor and replace the links with a fuse block from a second gen, or 626, probe or whatever.

It's not that critical...I've been running the TII 80 amp alt in my '80 for about a year now and no problems at all. I did replace the fusibles with new ones, though...

hanman 03-22-02 06:40 PM

My thoughts are the original links were not designed to handle the peak output from the newer alternators. Plus, it is far easier to troubleshoot a fuse than a link. And as an additional bonus the second gen fuse block gives you more flexibility in adding aftermarket accessories i.e. foglights etc.
just my opinion,

They seem to be handling the peak power of my 80 amp alternator quite fine and it's easier to replace the fusible link than do a wholesale changeover with all that cutting and splicing and soldering and etc.....

hanman 03-23-02 12:08 PM

It took me 30 minutes, and it looks stock. I thought it was very easy.
just my opinion though,
hanman

Sorry to bring this up Hanman, but I will be doing something similar to this in the near future. Can you PLEASE post pictures of this setup?

Thanks

Right now, he's sitting in his garage with the 2ndgen fuse box in his hand trying to figure out how whether he's going to make it work or whether he should stick it in there with double-sided 3M tape and make it look like it's done for real for his photo shoot....:p:

oh shit thats too much,
he probably got to the part were the tape came into play and started to think,

"fuck now i need to find some spare wire to run to this thing,
oh fuck it,its never gonna fly,I'll just pretend like i dont see the thread"

I promise pics of mine soon enough,
my problem is im converting from my breakers that i installed to agu fuses,
the fuse holders are roughly $5.00 a piece,
nice high amp fuses are $5.00 a piece
but the highest amp fuse i have on hand is a 50a,
and the highest i can find is a 60a,
i want 80a-100a

so i might not use the agu fuses and instead use waffle fuses,
a bit more expensive though.

riffraff 04-02-02 11:28 PM

why do you want fuses with that high of an amp rating?
granted they are probably not going to blow, but if by some chance they do, your wiring will probably go with it

riffraff 04-02-02 11:29 PM

ignore that last post... for some reason i was thinking that we were talking about the regular fuese, not the fuseable links.... guess it would help if i read the topic

V8kilr 04-02-02 11:33 PM

yep,
that and the fact i'll be replacing my fading 1st gen alt with a 2nd gen high amperage alt.

mar3 04-03-02 12:46 AM

Thought I'd toss this in for you so you won't have to search for it plus a little bonus from the South Forum...;)
