Fuel setup question

I have a 85' GSL with a carb'd S4 NA 13B and S4 tranny.

I was curious if I should keep my 48 dhla dellorto carb set up or convert it back to fuel injection. Main reason I'm thinking about doing this is cuz I'm unfamiliar with carbs and fuel injection is a lot more reliable.

I guess my main question is, how much would it cost to convert back to FI and would the cost be worth the reliability and the slight gain in power.

Also, would I be better off swapping that engine out with a stock TII?

btw my budget is about 5k.

I've thought about it as well, I've got an S3 13B with a Dell 48 and currently unhappy with it's tempermental attitude but after learning how it works and how to work on it, it's been pretty smooth until my fuel pump took a dump on me.

Some alternatives to stock F/I setups are listed and discussed here:

But probably the cheapest way to get back to F/I with an S4 motor would be the rest of the original intake, get some injectors, and use megasquirt just to control fuel, you could go back to using a CPS but that would require building a daughter board for the megasquirt and then getting FC Coils.

My personal opinion with a 5K budget would be to do a stock-ish tII build with bolt-ons to slim the engine down to what is absolutely necessary and then get a ford 8.8" so I won't have to worry about the rear. custom mounts would be required for the trans but I don't recall it being super intricate.

i definitely prefer fuel injection to carbs, but i wouldn't go so far as to universally claim carbs are less reliable - after all, they are simpler in terms of less parts to fail. they are fun to play with as well, and can provide some fundamental concepts that help you understand tuning a car.

anyway, cost is going to come down to how you plan on achieving your fuel injected setup. are you planning to get all the factory parts (manifolds, injectors, ECU, sensors, etc.) or are you planning to do something totally aftermarket? you have many options, so do your research and decide carefully.

as for your T2 swap question, i'd leave it as is simply because you're probably better off doing one project at a time. it's a sure-fire way to spend more money than you plan to.

I do agree that carb sometimes is better, but being that I don't know much about them and I know how the FI system work pretty well, a FI system would be a lot more reliable to me.

I think I'm going to go with a fairly stock S5 TII set up with a deleted rats nest.
