Fuel pump working.........but not. whats the deal?

Ok heres the problem......When the ignition is on i am not getting fuel to the carburator so i check the pump. The pump seems to be humming quietly just fine but there is no fuel being pumped. I accidently ground out the body of the pump on the frame and it started pumping quite loudly. I assume the two wires going in are power and ground so why would the pump not pump until the body grounds out. I thought bad ground at first but it is getting power and humming when its not grounded on the frame. So this is my pondery ....please let me in on the secret.

We just call that an "internal" failure

Throw it away and get a real FP, with a regulator and guage. You should be plesently suprised when you run it with the correct fuel pressure!

i have a 79 that has the exact problem. i tried what you describe above but i haven't been able to get fuel to the carb either. im stuck. i really want to get the car running again since its been sitting dead like that for almost 2.5 months now. i miss driving the SA. just not the same feeling in my FC.

anyone have any tips or a rough checklist i can go through. i know nothing about carbed cars. the SA is my first carbed car.

Nut job, sounds like your body ground is shot. On FB's the pump ground is on the right headlight motor (go figure), dunno about the SA's though. Also check the plug for the fuel pump behind the drivers storage bin. Just sounds like a bad connection somewhere.

Doesn't your pump normally not pump when it's just on on ?? Doesn't it wait till the engine's running then start to pump ??

Depends on the year. Later FB's pupms dont run in key on only. Earlier ones will.

Found the problem. Hooked up a DVOM and found out it was only getting about 8 volts which explains why it seemed to be running but not pumping. Just as Carl said it was a bad ground. I just cut the ground wire and made a new one right there. Problem solved
