Fuel Pump shot? Solutions?

Ok I tried searching, I recently tore my 78 RX7 interior apart and it is still half finished but I want to be able to drive the car back to my garage from my friends garage so I can paint it before finishing the interior. It started fine before the winter, but now it only starts and runs with the help of starting fluid...but then it dies after the starting fluid is used up heh. I tried putting power directly to the fuel pump thing that was the problem...is the pump on these cars noisy? should i hear it come on like in any other car? I don't have the entire wiring harness hooked up, what are the minimum things I need hooked up in the interior to get the car mobile? Also, the haynes manual explains how to remove the old pump but i don't think it's nearly as simple as they make it seem...any tips?

Thanks,
Colin

If you are looking to upgrade rather than just replacing what you have, check this thread: https://www.rx7club.com//showthread.php?t=529605

Thanks! One problem though...I feel like an idiot but i can't find my freaken fuel pump! I took the whole tank out and everything...all the metal shields are removed but no pump came down with it...does someone have a pic of their stock fuel pump or even their aftermarket so I can see where it SHOULD be?

you don't have to drop the tank. And yes, it is as simple as the manual says it is. it's in front of the tank, on top of a mounting plate, by the left rear tire.

just replace it wih a stock one. literally a half an hour job. you should hear a little noise from the pump when the ignition is inthe accessory position. replace your fuel filter at teh time of a pump change as well.

Keep in mind though, some models will not start the fuel pump until spark is verified on the trailing ignition...

yea teh 84/85 cars need to see ignition to kick on the fuel pump, his post indicates he has a SA so this isn't an issue.

Lol thanks everyone, found the pump finally, someone in the past had done quite the job of hiding it under a homemmade panel that was then undercoated to blend in with the rest of the underbody lol. So much for having a 100 percent original 78 Savanna lol. I replaced it and the entire fuel line with a Carter factory replacement pump and a nice clean new fuel filter. But now that I dropped the tank which i wanted to do anyways i'm going to find a place to clean it up and re-line it. It wasn't leaking before but it does have some surface rust and the car was sitting for almost 25 years...so I figure better safe than sorry.
