Fuel Pump Faltering

A general technical question for you mechanic-types out there...I am pretty sure my fuel pump is going out (high pitched occasional whine from the back right of the car, especially at low speeds.) I know that a rotten fuel pump can lead to stalling and other "roughness" issues. What I am wondering is whether a failing fuel pump can generally degrade performance. My car is not stalling (though it was last summer, but cleaning the carb seemed to help,) and starts well enough, but feels a bit sluggish. Could the fuel pump be responsible for this? I'll find out when I replace it, but I'm just curious if anyone knows.

As long as I have your attention...is there anything I need to look for in a replacement? My car is stock 12A. Is there a brand or anything I should try to find?

It can definitely cause leanness and bogging during long WOT pulls.

Just make sure the new pump is rated for 2-3 PSI or use a regulator.

low carb fuel bowl level = sluggish

Carter P60504 is a small enough pump to fit under the cover , comes with prefilter and is a flow upgrade over the facet type

note many older rx's suffer from poor voltage along the fuel pump wiring ,, this issue my be already showing its head
you can run a new ( fused ) relay and use the old wire as the throw signal

Thank you Bumpstart. I'l look into that pump. I know enough to replace the fuel pump but I don't have the technical knowledge to figure out what you said about the relay. I'll try looking it up, or if there is a link to instructions maybe you could point me in that direction? If I'm going to be under there, might as well check out what you're saying. Can I check the old wiring with a voltmeter or something?

Could be a clogged fuel filter causing the pump to work harder. I'd start with the filter and see what that changes.

P.S. I see that you are in Grand Rapids, but can't recall if we've met. I'll be home most evenings this week if you really get stuck.
