Fuel pump: exactly how loud should it be
Ok, the fuel pump in my '84 is quite audible. I'm thinking this is probably a bad thing. It's kinda funny though because the pitch of the hum changes like when you use the turn signals or hit the brakes. I'm guessing these things generally shouldn't be that loud and I am starting to wonder if it may be the reason the car is hard to start when it hasn't been run within like 6 hours. Even when I get it started, it'll run fine for a few seconds then die once or twice, like it is just running out of fuel. But after that it is fine.

No carb mods and I don't really know if the pump is stock or not. I seem to recall the previous owner mentioning he had changed it, but I'm not 100% positive.

The pitch of the hum changes for the same reason your headlights dim when you hit the brakes... you're just causing extra load on the alternator. I dont think it will fix your starting problem, but if it's humming badly, I'd change it. Might as well do the fuel filter while you're at it. BTW, the stock pump should be silent.
