Fuel Pump Cut Relay? Or What?

Look at a plate of linguini, and try to follow just one strand from end to end.
That's about how I feel after replacing the electrical system in my 82 with one from an 85 doner.
Of course, ripping out the 82 harness was easy, because I was basically going to discard it to my "Parts Dump" (shed fulla Rx-7 **** I'll never use!).
But the 85 harness had to be gingerly handeled to avoid damaging it. Since I'm stripping the 85, I did things like leave all the relays and **** on the connectors- even the hatch and gas door solenoids. This made it very easy to install into the 82.
I had tried unsuccessfully to adapt an 85 dash to the 82 electrical that was in the car. The 82 had the harness, but interior was gutted. The point of all this was to put the interior from a rotten-bodied 85 into the 82.
After months of neglecting the project, I finally just said, "It's gotta be all or nothing.", and replaced the whole damn harness.

Everything works...except that there's no power to the fuel pump! I do mean to say that the ONLY thing to NOT WORK after this knuckle buster, is the fuel pump~!

The pump has a connector that comes up thru the floor behind the driver. I have placed a light in the power connector instead, so I can have a visual indication as to whether or not it's getting juice when I try to start her.

It's NOT getting juice! (Very frustrated right now!)
The bulb is good, the fuse is good.
HOWEVER...The first time I did this, the light illuminated for a fraction of a second - so short was the time that the bulb never got a chance to totally brighten.

What I believe to be the "Fuel Pump Cut Relay" is clicking and apparently staying on when the key is turned on, even to accessory. It becomes warm. But I have yet to feel the one on my other Rex to see if this is normal.

What is the purpose of this relay? Its name suggests to me that it is a relay designed to shut off the fuel pump!
Is this true? Why?

What would cause my problem? I cannot locate any ground wires that are'nt screwed down, ect. Everything seems to be on the "up n' up".

I'm really just plain lost. A great deal of the frustration comes from the fact that I seem to be so close to actually getting this car into shape. The interior's in, and my whole family thought I was crazy when I bought such a piece of crap home two years ago!

MUST... PROVE... THEM... WRONG!
Thanks, Guys.

ok check on thing see if you have trailing ignition. I put a new motor in my car two days latter died. There was no power to the fuel pump so i decided to jump around it. IF you look where the wires fuel pump there is a clarion amp there is a single blue whire that connects. This si the remote turn on for the amp and can be used to run the fuel pump for the minute but i bet that you have no trailing ignition. Another way to check that is to jump the fuel pump into the blue wire and get it running then look and if you have no tach presto go get a new trailing ignitor. And hook it all back up and it will work. This is wierd to read but it is more than likley what is wrong. ps the car will run pretty good and it is hard to notice if you are only running on two plugs.

dan

that is the only thing i know

Could'nt get through to the forum last night.
I got her running tonight. What a joy!!! This car has 54K on it, and sat in a driveway for years and years in disrepair and neglect. And now she runs!
(Yipee, Heeya, ect.)
I bypassed the plug that the cut relay went into, and now I've got the pump working just fine.

But guess what? My tach does'nt work! So you're right, I think. It must be connected somehow.
It got dark, and I could'nt work on it anymore tonight, but I will start with your suggestion as to following wires to the trailing ignition. I am getting spark; I used a timing light just to make sure because it took hours (REALLY...HOURS!!!) to start it.

We'll see.
Thanks for the info.

I guess it's academic now, but here are some of my experiences:

I had problems with the plug for my fuel pump. I cut it off and soldered the wires together. It was getting current, but the pump still wasn't working. It turned out that the fuel pumps only work with the power wires one way around. Hook it up the other way (positive -> negative, and vice versa) and it won't go.

I could be wrong, but I think the fuel cut relay is there to stop the fuel pump from working in the case of an accident. The idea is that if you crash and there's a fire, you really don't want petrol continuing to be pumped. I don't know what could be causing it to trigger on your car, though.

I had the same problem, but what I did was a little bootleg...I just jumped the relay so the fuel pump would run all the time. Works for me.
