Fuel pump clicking like crazy

Got my car after sitting for 4 years and it wouldn't start without carb cleaner sprayed into the carb. Just swapped the fuel filter and noticed that it had a Purolator all purpose electric fuel pump. It is practically smaller than the fuel filter. The thing starts clicking like crazy when I turn the key to the on position. The guy who had it before me said it sounded like it was knocking. Probably running lean seeing as it has a holley carb/racing beat intake manifold, full exhaust and a street port. Has anyone ever used one of the purolator pumps? Maybe he was hearing the fuel pump? What kind of flow/psi do they put out?

Find a part number on it and Google it. That or search Summit or Jegs to find a matching one.

Ok so it says it operates between 7-9 psi, and it has a 45 gph capacity. Does that sound adequate for my set up? It's only 45 bucks. Not sure what CFM the carb is but my guess is 600CFM.

Don't remember what gph the Holley needs, it should be listed in the specs on the sale page for your model. 45 gph may be a bit low.

45GPH is on the low side. Most of the aftermarket pumps we use like the Holley blue or Red have an average of 70-100 GPH output.

Those pumps make alot of noise to start with. It's hard to determine whether you are having abnormal noise or not.

If you perform a fuel pressure test and the volume is low then the fuel pump noise is from caviatation.

Well there isn't any fuel in the carb, so I am just assuming that there is no fuel being pumped period. I've run a holley red pump in previous cars and it sounded nothing like this. Sounds like one of those toy machine guns. rat-tat-tat-tat-tat!

Mine makes the same kind of noise but I really have to listen to hear it. It seems to be louder when it is cold out though. Ive been driving the car now for about 6 months and it has not given me any fuel problems.

This is way louder than any fuel pump noise I have heard. I guess I should have explained that it is quite loud. Is it necessary to run a regulator with a holley red pump? The previous car I had used a holley 600cfm carb with the red pump, no regulator, and it ran like a champ. Is there any reason why I would need to with the Racing beat set up? Sorry about the Newbish questions... don't have much experience with carb'd rotarys.

Yes, the Holley needs 6 psi and I believe the Red puts out a little more than that. The Holley 4.5-9psi fpr is only 25 bucks.

When my pump went out, it made the loudest noise. Try taking the pump off and hooking it up to the battery. When i did that with my one that went out, it made me want to have a seizure. That thing rattled like no other while the new one just clicked.

I did hook it up to the battery. I thought it was going to jump out of my hand.
