Fuel Problems

I have been having some fuel problems lately with my 85 gls-se. First of all when it let it idle for a couple of minutes i hear a wining sound in the back, i am guessing the fuel pump but for what reason? Another thing is a couple times i have tried to start it and it died right away, unless i rev it back up then it will go back to an idle? The Fuel Filter seems to be origional, and i have a replacement but have yet to put it in. Would the Fuel Filter be the problem with these scenarios, or the Fuel Pump, or possibly Both?? The previous owner put in a new gas tank a couple of months ago and didn't replace the filter. He did replace the sending unit and fuel neck. The bitch leaks though on the top though, i can see the fuel leaking over the left side of my tank. Any areas where it could be leaking on top? Possibly not a good seal? Thanx ~Gavin

could be both, but i would definately replace the fuel filter. if it's the stock one, then it probably needed replaced a while ago.

The leak is probably from the sender area. Remove the plastic inner fender cover and you can see where the sender is bolted in. Probably messed up the installation. On your fuel problem, the filter could be the cause. Do that first, then see what you get.
