Fuel Problem on SE

Some of you guys may have seen my "it starts then dies" thread. I pulled the fuel line right before the filter and ran the pump. Sure enough, it will shoot some fgas out and then stops (the pump is still runnung). I've drained the tank several months ago and didn't notice anything disturbing and pump is brand new. What the hell is going on?

just because the pump is new dosent mean it's good. i woud return it as defective and get another one.

Well the pump never stops, just the fuel. Is it possible for it to pump some just when it starts and then no more?

Check the two filters before the pump.

Drop your tank and inspect your pick-up. Also, blow out all your fuel lines and replace the filter. Make sure you have a filter before the pump. Also, there is a vent valve bolted to the bottom of the car about 6 inches from the front of the tank. Make sure it is also open and clear. I've seen the sock come off the pick-up tube and then it sucks up what ever is floating aroung your tank. It should only take a couple of hours from start to finish. I've had to do this a few times and have even done it on mine once. good luck

Awsome replies. I was just under the car and did see what I thought was a filter directly before the pump. Is that the only one or are there more? Also it's part of the fuel line, what would I ask for at a parts store? Please help out with specific parts I need to fix/purchase. I'm at an apartement and am working at my parent's garage. The house is getting sold and the car's gotta be gone by next week. Can't work on it at my place and don't want to get rid of it. I JUST NEED IT TO RUN!!! Thanks a whole bunch guys-

you might also want to try replacing the rubber fuel lines before the pump. it may have a hole in it or might be collapsing.

There is a screen type filter on the pickup tube in the tank. The other filter is inside the fuel pump inlet tube, a little plastic cone shaped screen.

The screen in the tube, do I buy it by itself or does it come in a tube? Also are these screens generic parts or is it something I have to special order? I guess the basic question is: where do I get them?. Thanks-

If you're talking about a 13b EFI 'SE, then you're going to be looking for a fuel filter that looks like this;



This filter is all metal and much larger than you'd find on a carb'ed engine due to high fuel pressure needed to run the EFI injectors. If you get this fuel filter replaced, you'll probably find that your fuel 'starvation' problem is much better. Fuel pumps do go out on these cars from time to time (mine is original at 190k miles and still going strong), but you said that was a new part.

You did get an EFI fuel pump, right? Reply back and we'll see what we can do,

The part # for the in-tank filter is G087-42-113A I think.
The other filter I don't know the part #. I believe they are both only available from Mazda.
