Fuel Pick Up Screen Removal/Replacement
Fuel Pick Up Screen Removal/Replacement
I've cleaned and removed rust from my fuel tank, and I'm ready to paint inside and out with KBS Rust Seal. They make a kit for coating the inside, but I've discovered a problem.
There is a screen on the end of the fuel pick up line in the tank. When I coat the inside of the tank, this screen will get covered and clogged by the paint. I don't see any way to remove the screen, because there's no good access to it.
Anyone every remove or replace these? Can you describe how it's done? I saw a part number for this screen listed in another thread, which leads me to think there is a way.

You have to remove the fuel pick up tube from the top of the tank, and then you can slip off the screen.
The real question is how to remove the pick up tube without stripping those old rusty screws!

It's an 83' which is SA I believe. As far as I can tell, there's no way to remove the tube. The only visible way to access the screen is through the hole where the sending unit mounts.
Just found RE-Speed's comment under his replacement fuel tank thread.
"The stock ones are all one piece with the tank and none of it is removable."
So unless there's a clever trick someone's come up with for replacing it, I'll have to figure out a way to cover the screen so no paint gets in it during painting.
