Fuel line and tank questions

I was curious if you have to run a return line,I have a holley fuel pump and regulator with a Mikuni intake. Also what lines can you eliminate such as vent, return.Cause right now I have no return or vent hooked up,and my pump gets really loud then really quiet like its going to burn up.I've been running it with no return for years with n o problems, but I think the vent may be causing it.Any input would be helpful. Thanks

How does the FPR work without diverting fuel back to the tank?

carb regulators just restrict pressure down, instead of bleeding it off with a return like on a EFI system.

I see, I use a return style regulator with my carb.
The line going to the pressure regulator must have a ton of pressure in it then from being backed up. That would explain why the pump is so loud.

el pump

It's not that it's too loud,it just gets to where it starts getting really quiet like it's dead.Like I said, never had a problem with no return in a few years. The last carb setup I used didn't even have a return fitting on it.I'm just gonna have to work with it...something tells me its something really stupid as in something I missed when installing it.thanks
