fuel inlet screens(carb)

Hello all!

I've been trying to hunt down a fuel problem, and came up with these two boogers... Pictured, sitting on top of where they came from, the screens are crushed and rusted. My question is, can I just leave em out? Can you get just the screens from a parts store, or do you have to buy a complete rebuild/overhaul kit? I have a good fuel filter before the inlet.

Are there anymore "screens" like this I should check out? I'm aware a full "rebuild" is probally in order (car sat for 2 years), but I'm cheap! It will start and run, but acts as if its starving for fuel. Maybey these screens are the culprit?

Thanks for the help!

Ben

They dont look ripped or anything. You can probably clean them with carb cleaner and re-shape them if you want to keep them.

Or you can leave em out. They dont even come in a rebuild kit. Just put an inline filter just before the carb.

Yes theres 2 more screens hiding under the inlet valve seat. They are plastic cone shaped screens. You can do the same with those if you have an inline filter just before the carb.

Is your float level dropping? What makes you think its fuel starved?

I have to "pump" the throttle like a mad man to get it to start, and continue to pump to keep it running(thats my fuel starvation reasoning). I'm not sure its the problem, I have other issues to resolve first (ingnition mainly. waiting for cash to get parts).

I'm getting anxious to drive it, so I just decided to start poking around to see what I could find. My intentions are to see if I can see any gummy buildup anywhere, with the carb still on the car so I don't ruin any gaskets.

All the hoses and such on the rats nest and other components are good and do not leak. I'm hoping an intake leak hasn't developed.

Any help or ideas would be greatly appricaited.
