fuel gauge suddenly works?

I have had my '85 12a 7 for about two months now and the fuel gauge has never worked. That is untill yesterday. I was cruising down the highway and happened to look down to see the fuel gauge working. Best thing I saw in a while. What would cause this to start working out of the blue? Is there a fuse that powers the sending unit? I thought that I might have kicked the fuse panel on accident the other day and just didn't notice the gauge working right a way. Any thoughts??

99% of the time it is caused by corrosion on the sending unit connector. becareful when you take the connector off as the blades can break off.

Well, it's still working. I'll check the connection at the sending unit this weekend. Do I have to remove the tank to get to it? Is there an access panel on the inside of the car?
