Yes. There should be an arrow on the filter indicating the direction of flow. They put the arrow on for a reason. You should check and make sure that you installed the filter in the correct direction. If not, you probably aren't going to get optimum filtering and flow.

Wow that high tec. I know the cheap $3CDN filters I use have no direction. They are perfectly semetricle, and made of translucit plastic. I never noticed an arrow.

there may be more exposed surface area on the one side of the filter (ie, the outside of a barrell filter) which would be better at trapping grit without clogging (more surface=more grit trapping w/o constriction)

your filter may just clog up faster, but the difference doesn't matter at that price.

They do have an arrow, look closely. IIRC The arrow points to the part that goes into the middle. The gas flows into the middle of the filter, then up the sides and out, but don't quote me on that.

I get mine at Canadian Tire or a local PartSource, same type as you. Next time you're at a Canadian Tire, take a look.

I got the cheapo $3-4 model from Autozone, and even that one had a preferred orientation. If you look at the top of the filter, right between the two nipples you should see a raised arrow that is molded into the filter. It is the same color as the filter so you kind of have to study it for a second. It will be pointing towards one of the nipples to indicate the direction of flow.

For me it's not really about the price of the filter, it's about correct installation to ensure optimum performance. Besides, is it really that hard to crawl under there and take the filter back off to check??? You should be able to do that in about 5 minutes.
