Front wheel noises!!!!!!!

I have been experiencing noises comming from the front end of my rx. I have narrowed it down to the wheel bearing nut. I had it set at the right tightness it seemed, then it loosened off, and started to make noise again. So I tightened it, hoping that would stop the noise and vibration. Well I guess I have over tightened it, now there is a new noise... Soooo i have the car sitting in the driveway now, and I need to know how tight to put that nut...I don't want to do this again....

once you tighten the nut to the right specs, there is a piece (cant remember what its called) that goes on after it and then a cotter pin after that to stop it from loosening

when i was changing my wheel bearings, the way i did it was to tighten it first moderately, then turn it back a little and keep making small adjustments - the idea is to get the wheel hub to spin freely while still having very minimal side to side wobble.

If you overtightened the front wheel bearings and it created a new noise.. then you backed it off to the proper spec.. check again for any noise, if there is then theres the possibility that the bearing housing may have been damaged
DO NOT take any chances.. you dont want your wheel/s seizing up while driving
Be safe.. remove the rotors, inspect and replace the wheel bearings as necessary

Also, if you look into the FSM, it will tell you how many pounds of force it should take to turn the brake rotor based on pulling from one of the lug studs. This is a pretty critical element, since having a bearing too loose or too tight could result in failure of the part, and an accident.

Once you've done this a few times, you'll kind of get a feel for how much tension should be on the rotor when it's tensioned properly.

Also, the post above talked about a cotter pin, which is inserted through the hole in the center spindle and captures a 'Castle Nut' or castlated nut which prevents the tension from changing - THIS PIN AND NUT MUST BE USED! Failure to use the correct nut and pin WILL result in the wheel bearing failure.

Anytime you replace wheel bearings or brake rotors, you should use a NEW cotter pin, and bend it over according to the FSM. Good luck,

I think the problem started when the previous owner put a new caliper on. I noticed the noise right when I got it. After looking at it for awhile, I realized that the outter part of the caliper is really close to the rotor, to the point where it was rubbing. I took it all apart, and looked at it, and I noticed there was a rubber washer type of thing riding between the seal, and the bearing. I was like, "Why is this here??" Soo... Being a neubie to the RX, I put it back where it was, not stopping to think, and this kind of worsened the rubbing problem, that rubber piece essentially pushed the rotor out further, and made it rub on the outter part of the caliper more, sooo. I tore it back down, looked in the manual I have, and saw there is no rubber piece like this listed...so.. I tossed it out, and no more noises....So I was off taking corners like a mad man. Then one day, it started to make noises again, I had reused the cotter key, and I guess it let go, and it loosened off. So.. I said, to hell with this, and tightened it right down, an uninformed move, and then there were much nastier sounds comming from there. So today I loosened it off, and now its back to its original noises..... ahhh...time for a new car... j/k
