Front Brake questions! (Big brake upgrade)

Hey guys,
well I am thinking about upgrading my front brakes before I get my wheels so that I will not regret it in the long run.

But I have a few questions, I am going to use the adapters from respeed so I can put TII rotors, 4 piston Calipers and pads on. I want to run Stainless steel brake lines (DOT APPROVED), but what kit do I get then if I am using a hybrid of brake setups...

My next question is does anyone know of any sources of new TII calipers, or wheel bearings? And then should I just get used hubs?

Alot of parts to piece together, if anyone has stuff that may help me out feel free to PM me!

Thanks!
Dan_s_young

I believe that the fittings are the same size so a 1st gen set of lines should work. thepartstrader.com use to be a good place to find stuff like brake calipers and such. New I don't know about. You might have to cough up some serious dough for new ones.

Get FD calipers if you can. Give you a few mm's more clearance than TII's and look better as well

I can can do new calipers about that range as well. The core is what will bite you. They are re-man from original mazda castings.

I spent a month looking for a reman that used new castings but never found one.

Dan_s_young,

The bearings are stock parts along with the grease seal. Should be able to get those at your local parts store. If you need the calipers let me know and I will put a package price together for them with the brake kit. Save you some cash.

respeed

Dont misinterpret this as bad press anyone. Im glad they make this kit and am happy with my purchase. the quality and the service I had from respeed is are top notch.

you should make and sell the wheel adpaters and or spacers that are required for this kit also.

I never did find anyone that would make me hubcentric spacers.

also using the 4 lug hubs and redrilling the big 5 lug rotors turned out to be bad advice in my opinion. i had to get nearly 2 inches of spacer to make my 40mm offset wheels work so I may as well have just got and adapter/spacer for the same price and not had the hassle of redrilling my rotors.

MikeyD,

The use of spacers is only needed if you try to run stock FC wheels.

We could not make the hub sit any differently on the spindle and have the bearings in the correct place. It simply comes down to the kit may not be for everyone.

We appreciate your opinion though. You may like our next kit though so keep an eye out on the forum.

Im interested to see what my new braking performance will be like when I can get the 275/40/17's on and this big brake kit. It will be cool to see the difference... And hopefully I don't have any problems with the FC wheel thing because im ordering the CCW's. I guess ill just need to measure 10 times and be extra sure when I order them that they will work...

ive done this conversion. for the brake lines i got a local shop to make me SS lines for $75 just for the front. kind of high, but mecessary. as far as billy selling spacers with the kits, i think its a bad idea. if you want the spacers, buy them. i was easily able to find to purchase two sets of wheels that fit. well, one has correct backspacing but wrong lug pattern. i got a set of Work Equips 16x7 and 16x8 for cheap. i have 205/40 all around. the tires are two small for the 8 and are kind of stretched. since the tires are two small even my 16x8 fit on the front. its easy, just figure out what backspacing youre looking for and go wheel hunting.

i take it most people are buying a differnt offset for the front vs their rear wheels rather that buying spacers to put up front and haveing 4 matching wheels?

brake upgrade

I went with a kit made here in Australia which retains the standard offset and Wheel stud PCD 4 x 110.
hoppers stoppers

the rotors are 290mm in dia however the smallest rim size you can run is 15".

I noticed you (or the kit) switched the brakes from the OEM trailing position to leading. It looks like your brake hose is dangling unsupported. Be careful you don't damage it.

Seriously though how much did that conversion end up costing you?

Looks VERY VERY impressive, I just dunno if I can spend that kinda dough at this point.

This thread should be stickied, and have all the companies that sell big brake conversions listed along with other correct parts needed and wheels that fit/don't fit.

It's one area of the first gens that is definitely under par and it would be nice to have all the relevant information in one thread for people to see.

Ok, I thought of another question. For bearings when I do the big brake upgrade I am going to be using the GSL/GSL-SE bearings still correct? I remember reading in another thread that the outer bearing is from the GSL/SE because it has to mate tightly over the spindle. But is the inner wheel bearing still the stock GSL/SE bearing just used with the piece that is included in the kit?

Thanks
