Fried Starter!

My starter has become ware and not doing its job to it's potential anymore.

My point is this....

Are there any other vehicles that use close to the same one as my 84 GS (manual trans) that I could pull of a junk yard car that would fit with minor or no fab work???

If not, or this is just a stupid question then feel free to call me a dumbass!

it would be too time consuming to try and make someting work. it would be so much eaiser and would save you the headache if you just got a reman. from napa's website:
Starter - Remfd - Standard
w/ Manual Transmission w/ 11 Tooth Drive Gear RAY
2446243 $94.99
Core $27.50

There's a good chance that your starter is fine. Most likely cause is bad electrical connections. Replace both battery cables with quality parts, and clean up all connections related to the starter. I'll bet you a beer that your starter will perform like a champ afterwards.

I chased this same type of situation, putting up with poor performance for over a year. Once I replaced the cables, it worked like new again. This is the original starter on a car with 214,000 miles on it. These starters usually live forever.

If you do a little research, you will find many threads where people have gone through a few different starters, assuming that each one was bad and then replacing them under warranty. Don't waste your time like that. Even if it turns out that the starter really is bad, those cables need to be replaced anyway. They are one of the achilles heels of the 7 due to the fact that they are aluminum and corrode internally, reducing their potential a little more each year.

its not that bad cleaning the armature off with a little emory cloth and replacing the brushes. also i changed the bushings out since i had a little play in the shaft.had to lube the starter clutch too. cost me about 28 dollars for parts and an hour of my time. been working like a champ ever since.

the most common cause of a starter failure is overcranking or oil contamination.
overcranking causes the starter solinoid to burn up and oil contamination causes to brushes to overheat because of increased resistance between the brush and the armature.

another option is taking the starter to an alternator and starter rebuild shop. hella cheaper and comes with a warranty to boot. its also nice to give the business to somebody locally than to the big guys. who knows you might even make a friend.
