Fresh Air Intake, Remote filter or not?

I'm finally getting ready to put together a fresh air intake on the FB. So far I've found two possible ways of going about it, with the big difference being where the filter element mounts.

The first option is to buy the K&N plenum from summit racing and run ducting to the front in the usual fashion on the side of the radiator and then mount a filter at the end of the ducting next to the front of the radiator. The plenum itself will fit fine with no hood clearance problems.

The other option is to buy the ram air box from ramairbox.com and have the filter inside the assembly, next to the carb. Then run ducting the same way, but with a collector of some sort at the end next to the radiator. I'm not sure if this thing will clear the hood, which kinda sucks.

Cost will probably be the same either way, so thats not an issue. The guy at ramairbox said that the above model is only good for 250hp, again not an issue with the 12a. Anyone know what the K&N plenum is rated at? I'm thinking it'll be okay for less than 200hp.
There is a note on the K&N unit thats states:

"* Works best with small displacement engines under 200 c.i.d. or low revving V6/V8 engines. If the engine requires more than 45 sq. in. of filter area, then this plenum should not be used unless the carburetor is re-jetted which may result in a loss of high rpm power."

any comments out there?

You know those bonnets good to 250 hp are forced induction (turbo) items. theres an filter element in there

Id go with the one by Ramairbox...with cool air being forced in at speed. With the K&N design..the carb will seem to have to 'suck' air from all the way from the front.

I agree!

I mounted an airfilter under the nose of my car with 3 inch pipe to the turbo. I gained a little bit of bottom end (?!) but lost a tonne up top.

My next setup will have pipe getting the cold air into the filter mounted almost directly off the snout of the turbo

Thanks for the input fellas. I'm feeling the ramairbox.com unit is the way to go. Anyone have any experiences mounting one with a holley carb? It measures 17x4, which might make for a tight fit.

I kinda think that the K&N X-stream would flow nicely.
