Found out what the mystery fluid was.

A while ago when I first got my new tires, I would haul around this one, 270 degree turn that was a freeway onramp. So a long, hard, steady turn, and at the last 100 feet or so of the turn a fluid would creep up, from the front of the car some where, (I couldn't see) and fly through my open window to hit me in the face. Since the car was running normaly, and the fluid didn't have a gasoline smell to it I didn't worry about it. I thought it was trapped condensation or something.

Over this same period of time the gears in the transmition started grinding, or crunching into place sometimes, and I though the whole tranny was just getting old and tired.

Well today I finally put 2 and 2 together when my clutch feel went bad. You would have to stand on the pedal just to put in into gear. So I shut the car off and popped the hood, the clutch master cylinder was almost dry, somehow the fluid was gettting up, out from under the cap, coming through the seem in my hood, and flying back through my driver's side window. Amazing. Now I know that I had clutch fluid on my face all of those days.

It was one of those moments that make you say, aww... I'm dumb.

Does any one have a solution to this? My car isn't some amazing cornering machine so I know this must happen to road racing or auto x guys.

No suggestions here other than clean off all the brake fluid and save the paint. There is an insert that sits inside the top of the brake master, maybe something like that would help the clutch master.

Your face should have felt oily and you should have been able to smell the fluid as it is the same as brake fluid.....
Either way, I find it amazing what that fluid went thru JUST to make sure it would hit you in the face to let you know you were haveing a problem. Next time LISTEN to your car when it SLAPS you like that... LOL LOL

Yeah, it has a little rubbery piece in there that probably does a good job of keeping the fluid down in there. Hmm... I was thinking those resivoir socks that you can get, but I would still need to refill my cylinder from time to time.

I thought the constisency was from the fluid runing through the engine bay. It didn't seem oily enough to be clutch/brake fluid.

Oh, the corner was a long right hander, so the fluid would run partially up the a-pillar before coming inside.

That is beyond amazing...

I'd say the res. sock idea is good. You could maybe but a plastic bag over it with some painters tape.

OK, first let me say
I've heard of your car telling you when it's sick, but this is rediculous!

Second, I hate to ask the obvious, but was the cap loose? It seemes very strange that any significant amount of fluid would escape with the cap on, even in a very hard corner, and from the sound of things you had a river comming out of it.

Third, my car has a lift off rubber membrane under the cap, does yours?

Like I said, I don't have some crazy setup, Yokohama AVS ES100's, RB springs, tokio blues, and the mazdatrix idler arm (if that makes a difference). And it was more like a trickle, wasn't a constant stream, imagine some on constantly spitting in your face, like that kind of feel.

No that cap wasn't loose, and I do have that little rubber piece inside the cylinder. I still don't believe it happened either, so all you FB's with modified suspensions better check your clutch fluid level next time your adding some oil.

Lucky you didnt get any in your eyes!
Brake fluid HURTS A LOT when you get it in the eye.Your reaction would have been uncontrollable, and taking your eyes off the road during a fast 270* freeway onramp merge, could be disaterous........

sounds like I got lucky, that would have sucked. Does it feel anything like gasoline in the eyes? I have had that pleasure once.

be careful with that brake fluid, it is designed to absorb water so if you get it in your eye (and your eye is full of water)...not good

Hydroscopic is the term on the DOT fluid. . . .
There's GOT to be a problem with that cap. I autocross and run the closed mountain road that's near here, and have never had a problem like that. Matter of fact, I've only had to change the clutch fluid twice in the car's life. . . .
