Flywheel removal

I have searched for this, but can't seem to find the answer. I can take the flywheel nut off, but I can't take the actual flywheel off. I have tried wedging it out and hitting it with a heavy rubber mallet, to no avail. Please if anyone has any help! It's a 12A, btw...I would like to get this off so I can tear the engine apart.

Edit: Which side of the flywheel SHOULD I be hitting with the mallet? the backside (can only hit in one spot) or the front side, towards the outer rim?

Re: Flywheel removal

Whenever I've torn down an engine I've used a dead blow hammer to remove the flywheel. HItting it on one edge then the oposite till it came off. I don't think a rubber mallet has enough mass or the ability to really transfer the blow to the wheel... it's probably just bouncing; at least thats what happened to me.

You can also go buy a flywheel puller. At harbor freight or a discount tool shop, where they sell cheap *** chinese tools, for cheap. Or else maybe sears has one?

Oh and BTW even with the Deadblow hammer, which you should buy one if you don't alreaedy have one, it takes a good amount of smaking.

But I love the loud <<<BIIINNNGGG>>> sound that the flywheel makes

Later, =-Sam-=

Re: Flywheel removal

Sorry for the double post...
but hit the back side on one spot, then rotate the wheel to oposite side and hit it and then again, then again, then again.... <<<BING>>>, then <<<BING>>>, then <<<BING>>>

leave the big nut on so the wheel doesn't fall. and leave the front e-shaft nut in so you can turn the flywheel without hurting anything.

I just smacked it... fairly hard I guss. I ate the crap out of my hammer doint it. But if you don't need the flywheel try a hand-sledge... that should do it!

but really to do it right you should have a puller. They're probably only like $8 for a cheapy one.

Big hammer ~ hit hard.

I have tried all those things you mentioned in the past and then called my Mazda guy. And he siad it hard with a hammer (a real hammer) on a spot the clutch does not bolt to.

I thought he was pulling my lead. I hit it once and the flywheel came off.

Glad to hear you got that thing off!

Hate it when something that should be simple, turns out to be a real bitch!

I'm having the same problem with mine. I tried using a puller and it started cutting into the end of the e-shaft. I'll try a dead blow hammer but I kind of need to keep the flywheel so I don't want to do too much damage.

Ever heard of the right tool for the job?

Ok Everyone... say it with me...

"A flywheel puller"

Kinda like a giant steering wheel puller. You screw two bolts into the threaded hole on the flywheel around the center, put a cup on the E-Shaft end, and screw a center bolt into the cup... couple turns with a 12" adjustable wrench and POP! Off goes the flywheel...

Or you could just use a hammer and risk damaging the ring gear teeth

Yea, you should get a flywheel puller instead of risking doing damage to your flywheel. I bought one for $24 at a NAPA parts store. You can also rent them for about $8 a day plus deposit. My flywheel was so tight that is was difficult to get off, even with a puller. I don't even want to think of the potential damage I could have done to the flywheel by using a hammer to get it off.

I manage an Autozone. I used our puller. It didn't move the flywheel at all.

trust me, it'll seem like it's not going to budge, and then, if you have a good flywheel puller, the flywheel wil just go SNAP and pop off... which is why you leave the nut hanging on a couple of threads. If you have a crappy forged flywheel puller, nothing will be happening and then it'll just go SNAP and you'll have a two or three piece flywheel puller

You need one that's meant for bigger vehicles, that is CNC machined or machined and welded. The forged pullers are kinda a multi-purpose thing, they can be used for steering wheels too

Hit the flywheel on the back with a HEAVY HAMMER, turn 1/8 turn, hit again, turn 1/8 hit again, keep repeating the procedure it will come off. You will also notice the tone of the sound it makes when you strike it change, that means its coming off

Be sure to thread the nut on a few turns so you dont end up with a broke foot when it hits the floor... Also dont hit the teeth of the flywheel

Big hammer ~ hit hard.

I guess if you didn't have a big hammer or a piece of fire wood as mentioned aboue you could use a puller...

But, there is a certain grace to a big hammer.

Remember: To a man with a new hammer, many things look like a nail!

One good smack with a 2 lb dead blow hammer took care of it.
