the alum. one weighs nine pounds (around 13 with the counter weight) plus I think that it will make my car feel lesss like a slug all the time and have a little pep behind it in second and third

Whats the point? much better than stocker and much streetable to use than an aluminum or lightened steel. If you read my comment, it will make it rev faster but for drag racing, aluminum flywheel suck.

lol I drive a 100hp rx7,
I never have drag raced anyone and never plan on it.....its too embarassing to be even with a 95 stock civic through third gear and yes light fly's give up on top end runs due to the lack of momentum

what I use my car for is 2nd/3rd gear twisties and I know that a lightend flywheel will make the car come alive, I like to drift the car in the rain (again not enough power for dry conditions) and I will have more usuable power with a light fly, I also want to paticipate in a few auto x as these are what I have set my car up for since I owned it

hmm.....that link makes me not wanna do the whole 81 flywheel swap at all. there are more uncertain opinions there with the 81 flywheel swap then witht he alum flywheel.

The more I think about this, the more I question whether the flywheel shoud have even been turned. What is the point of turning the entire flywheel, when the wear surface is supposed to be replaced instead. I would contact Mazdaspeed and ask that question before I would even consider buying it.

Good point. What's the use of a replaceable friction surface, if the user wants to cheap-out and get the whole unit machined. A new friction plate may not be able to even be used on this flywheel now.

When I was running a 215mm aluminum flywheel, I had my extra friction plate turned but mainly for cleaning due to no replacement friction plate. I accumulated extra parts since I did lots of R&R. However, out of 5 IIRC, I was only able to use one since most of them were warped.

I asked the seller this question and the response was that the friction plate had low miles put on it and before the selle rbought the flywheel originally, he had the friction plate resurface, so it wasn't actually the entire wheel being resurfaced.

That's not good either. By cutting the replacement disc, it lowers it in relation to where the pp bolts up, Net result is the pp has a longer distance to go to clamp the clutch disc. What is the price of a new flywheel from Mazdacomp and how much is the replacement disc, with screws and a counterweight? A 9lb fly is very light, designed for roadracing, not street use. I think in the long run, you'ld be better off getting a new 13 lb fly.

yeah I heard that driving becomes annoying with such light weight flywheels, but to what extent I don't know anyone with personal day to day driving experience driving lightened wheels.

what is everyones experience with driving on light weight flywheels ? good or bad I want opinions from those that have put miles on one ?

True that. Had that problem and took the tranny at least 2x to figure out that I need to bring the entire flywheel/clutch closer to the t/o bearing. I put a 1/8 aluminum shim between the rear counterweight and the aluminum flywheel. Also, adjusted the pedal's push-rod.
