Flex Fan.

yesterday i bought and installed a 17' S.S. flex fan.
It makes some noise.and fits perfect in the fan shroud.
on the front of my car i can drop a paper towl and just
like a jet engine intake it gets sucked in to the radiator.
Car must run 5-10 degrees cooler...big difference.

I have a 15 inch on my car, pushes crazy air. I'm not running a clutch on mine so if I floor it the car almost sounds supercharged/turbocharged.

Are you talking about the flex-a-lite fan that runs about 30 buck from summit?? I was also thinking about getting this.

No, mine is a heyden flex-fan. and right about $ 29.00
$30.00 . no fan clutch, much lighter then what was on there, and that sucker does pull tons of air, sounds
like much more is going on under the hood..I used to have one on my 69 mustang too. everybody,,just about,
has a horror story about flex fans, sticking blades in
hoods or the ground,,not me,, this heyden is rated at
8000 rpm's.

Hey Mark, did you buy it online or from a local store, if online, where from? Also, do you have it setup pushing air into the radiator or pulling air though it?

I bought it from my local worldwide auto parts store.
first i bought an 18' fan, then i measured the old fan.
returned the 18'.and went to a auto parts store i've
never been to accross town, and found the 17' at worldwide,,( it used to be super shops) the 17' fits
perfect in the shroud..The fan pulls air through the
radiator and oil cooler because the way the shroud is
designed.Like i said ,,i can drop a paper towl in front
of the grill ( or in my case, the opening on the mariah mode four ) and the paper towl gets sucked in to the radiator. " It pulls crazy air"

No power loss,,or gain. same power,,just way more
cooler,,even with the a/c on full blast, just below half
on the temp guage, all day long,,I also added some
water wetter to the cooling system too.

You know,,comphared to what the car came with ( stock fan and clutch ) the stock fan doesn't do anything,it's just heavy, I feel it is $ 30.00 very well spent,I recommend it highly...no plastic,,stainless steel,it's still
light,,man !! 10.000 rpm's **** ! thats crazy..

Please help me understand the mechanics between the stock clutch type vs. what you have there without the clutch?

I thought that the clutch was there to disengage the fan at higher RPMs since it is presumed that you are moving and the air will get pushed in while you drive? And parasitic loss is kept down since it is disengaged.

But without the clutch, your fan is always engaged even when you don't need the fan spinning, like at road speed. i.e. increased parasitic loss.

real sorry, not to play spelling bee,
"Hayden" with an 'a'?
incase anyone is searching for it.
I know they have a site on-line.

Thanks for the heads up..heres the story..Here in san diego it gets warm in the daytime. My 82 GS has A/C
and i use it alot ( my a/c is awesome ,Ccccold ) well
i've been working in vista ca. a good 60 or so miles
one way,,The cars temp, just above half to three quaters hot,,,too hot for me,,so to check a different
kind of fan i'm trying this flex fan . seems to do just
what i wanted it to do,,and the temp guage now is
just below half and stays there..I'm not jo-bob racer
where i worry about how high my car can rev,,it winds
up fine,my 12a runs good with or without the a/c. It amazes me..,.same power..maybe my fan clutch wasn't
working right with the other fan or something..I guess i'm not alone by going the flex fan route..the racing fans
are reverse rotation but still no clutch. I guess it doesn't matter what way it spins as long as the fan pulls or pushes air through the radiator..One of the most important parts of a cooling system is the fan shrouds.
