cheap? how about free... carquest has ac o-rings and since they dont have part numbers for them they are completely free

just ask for a/c o-rings (which they'll pull from under the counter) and ask how much... more than likely they will say "nothing".

but i wouldnt be surprised if they finally got part numbers and started charging them

Doc is absolutely right on all counts to service your A/C. A/C is also my industry. Make sure you get that dryer in the system before you close it up. Here's an FYI - R22 was the preffered refrigerant before R12 came on the market. Now it's gone because it's not ozone friendly. R22 will also be phased out by 2020. Good luck with the changeover.

thanx, but i know a guy who does A/C an can get a full tank of R-12 for $120

For that price it has to be "Hot" freon.

Hope it is not the stuff from Mexico.

nope its the real ish, he works for sears repair center and brings home a few tanks of r12 and 134 and other refrigerants every now and again.... i guess his boss is cool like that

If he is bringing home a full tank which is a 30lb cylinder of R12 then he is not asking permission to bring it home if you know what I mean.

A 30lb cylinder of R12 goes for around $800.00 wholesale.

Bumping this up for members that may be thinking about getting their A/C systems opearting because of the heat.

I found this interesting so I thought that I would share. Also since R-134a is already going way of R-12, with the European Union already banning it by 2011, has anyone considered alternatives to R-134a?

A/C Time Line

1957 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham is the first vehicle to have standard A/C.
1970 Environmental threat of halogenated hydrocarbon refrigerants identified.
1987 Montreal Protocol: Phase-out of hydrogenated hydrocarbon refrigerants.
1990 Transition to R-134a (hydrofluorocarbons) refrigerant begins.
1994 Transition to R-134a completed.
1997 Kyoto Protocol: Objective to reduce environmental impact of hydro fluorocarbons set.
1998 Lorentsen study detemines CO2 to be best "natural" refrigerant.
1998 Phoenix Alternate Refrigerant Symposium compares R134a to other alternatives.
