Smile Fixed hard start/stalling problem!

Before the fix the choke was not working properly on start-up. It would sputter and die. The only way to get it warm enough to maintain an idle was to hold the revs at 3000 rpm for several minutes. Well I am not sure what this thing is called that I fixed, but it is located on the rear of the carb and has two vacuume lines attached. It has a plunger with a lever that comes off a stop post. I fabricated a piece of metal to hold the lever off of the stop tab, pushing this plunger into the dashpot as far as it could go. Now the choke works and the car fires right up when cold. What is this thing that I manipulated? It is visable without removing the air cleaner.

The only thing is, the choke will not return on it's own. I have to manually push it back. How do I fix this?

But what does it do? Am I hurting anything by keeping it the way I modified it?

Check the sensor on the back of the waterpump housing.

the choke assembly behind the dash might be broken, or simply unplugged, check there first.

I'm not going to get technical here, but in short, it keeps the engine from dying after you let off the throttle. It's set to extend a plunger to slow the descent of the throttle all the way back to idle.

It's not that plunger, but the one above it with the two vacuum lines attached. Any ideas what it is?
